2K probs

Recommended Posts

Oh, the shame! The ignominnimomonny! I am forced to beg for assistance.

My machine:

Asus A7V, 512MB RAM, 850 Socket Athlon.

1 30GB HD with Windows ME, 1 25GB HD as data storage(soon to be replaced).

Creative GEForce video card, Creative SB Audigy sound card, Realtek 100MB network card, Diamond PCI modem, Conexant USB modem.

I'm installing Win2K on my machine on a new HD. 2 Probs occur.

1) I installed CM because I was concerned about graphics quality with my Nvidia graphics card (Creative GEForce Annihilator Pro DDR). No probs with the quality, just a major prob with the resolution. It'll only work in 640x480 and when it tries to set up for a resolution higher than that I get a DirectDraw(?) error. What do I need to install?

2) I can't get either of my modems to get a dial tone. I know they're ok, because they both run fine under WinME. I know the number's ok. It simply tells me there's no dialtone. Oh, and the USB modem hangs all the USB devices when it dials out.

Heeeeeelp!

The 'DirectDraw' error you describe sounds like something you get when you attempt the next resolution after the lowest you can select. When selecting resolutions CM typically starts at your current desktop resolution, but at a possibly higher refresh rate. Successive choices would be lower refresh rates and then the next lower resolution at its highest refresh rate, etc.

In some instances, a driver or DirectX problem, CM will use 'software rendering'. This may be what you're currently using. During the resolution selection process it should say that the current resolution is from the 'Primay Display Adapter' (or sometimes the name of the video card) or it should say 'Software (something)'.

I'd suggest that you install the VIA 4-in-1 drivers (v. 4.37), since they can address some AGP issues:

There is also a patch from Microsoft/AMD for 'AGP Applications' and AMD CPU-based systems and Windows 2000. I don't know how much of a requirement this patch is, but you may want to try it (it may come built into one of the Service Packs for Win2K):

Regarding your Diamond PCI modem, do you know what model it is (i.e. - SupraExpress 56i, SUP207x). I don't know if there may be a firmware/driver update for your modem or not that may help.

Regarding the Conexant USB modem - are there any other USB device, especially a keyboard or mouse that are also installed on the USB Bus ? I'm not sure if any of the 4-in-1's updates may help with this issue or not. It may be related to the drivers that Win2K uses for the VIA KT133's chipset's USB implemantation. Is there a particular brand to your Conexant USB modem (that would be the most likely source for any firmware/driver updates) ?

The latest BIOS for your ASUS A7V motherboard is 1.09, though I don't see anything that seems Win2K/XP specific about the latest version:

Also, what is your computer type under Windows 2000 ? Go to Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel > System control panel > Hardware tab > Device Manager button > double-click on the Computer icon and find out what your computer is designated as. Typically it will either be a 'Standard PC' or 'Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC'. The latter one will typically move all PCI/AGP devices to one IRQ, which may cause problems with some devices that aren't completely ACPI compliant (sharing IRQs - usually a driver issue).

Windows 2000 comes with DirectX 7.0a, which should be fine for CMBO and your GeForce. Depending on your CD for Windows, you may have a plain version of Windows 2000 or you may have up to a Service Pack 2 version. You can check your Service Pack level by going to Start Menu > Settings > System control panel > General tab (initial tab) it should say your Service Pack level in the 'System' area of the tab. Service Pack 2 is a 100Mb download:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.asp?

Search for 'Windows 2000', OS: Windows 2000, 'within the last 12 months'. On the third page of results there is a download dated 16th May, 2001 named 'Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 Network Install & Symbols' which is approx. 104Mb in size. This will download (more than you need actually) the entire Service Pack so that you can run it locally. There is a Service Pack 2 Installer that is only 500K in size, but it requires an Internet connection to download the rest of the Service Pack (which may be smaller, but something of a problem for you at the moment). If this is too large, there is an option to order the SP2 CD (when you click to download the Service Pack).

Your advice was spot-on, thanks Schrullenhaft. I got a new version of the 4-in-1 drivers (mine were dated 1999!) and an updated modem driver and everything's tickety-boo. I will try newer Nvidia drivers to see if it fixes the CMBO message. At the moment CM is using Sofware Mode on the 3D DirectX test and can't get above 640x480 - every time it tries it puts out a "could not initialise Direct3D" - so I suspect my 1999 Nvidia drivers could also be the problem :D
