Can't Connect via TCP

Recommended Posts

Situation: 2 machines using Syagates ICS and firewall. The machines can play CM fine against each other, but I can't get out to someone else. With the firewall disabled we can "ping" each other, (from the dos prompt) but the CM games refuse to see each other. As a test, we connected MS' Age of Empires just via TCP just fine. :(

Are you sure that you're giving out the correct IP address to each other ? Do you know if your IP address is static or does it change ? With some Cable modem setups, the IP addressing scheme utilized by the ISP may prevent CM from working with TCP/IP (when it is usually acting as a server).

The Port enabling would only be necessary when your firewalls are on. As a rule only so many Ports are opened up to prevent hackers from utilizing one with a trojan virus/zombie, etc. You'll have to look through your documentation/on-line help to see where to configure this in your firewall software.

Since you seem able to play another player on your local LAN (if I read you correctly here), but you seem unable to connect via your Sygate ICS to an external player (in CM at least) I'd assume that there may be something about your ICS configuration that isn't setup for CM (port forwarding of the aforementioned port numbers ?). With the Sygate ICS, is your actual physical connection on another computer (internal or external cable modem) ?

Is CM listed as an "application" for Sygate to manage incoming and outgoing traffic ? I'd guess by modifying the CM application's (as listed in the Sygate management app) "Connection Details" you may be able to specify a port. I can only guess that MS' Age of Empires may be a popular configuration that is already known (but CM isn't).

I don't know about ZoneAlarm's settings either

Thanks again for the help. Our mutual ISP assigns static IP's and those are the one's we're attemting to connect on. My two machines are connected by an crossover cable, and an additional NIC card in one machine connects to the cablemodem. Sygate does show CM as an authorized app. I did find settings on the firewall that refer to Remote server ports, and local ports. These let you set ports for specific apps. I set the local ports for CM to 7022-7024, but haven't had a chance to try it yet. You may also be onto something about the ISP's IP handling, since my service agreement specifically disallows servers on it's network. We'll see..

Success, the port thing did the trick. Odd that even with Sygate's Firewall turned off (as far as I could tell from the CTL-ALT-DEL list) I couldn't connect..The firewall had to be on AND those ports enabled for CM to finally connect.

Appreciate all your help
