ColinL
Hi guys, received CM last week and I'm thrilled with it. Is there anyway whithin the game to check/adjust the 3D preferences. I'm still using V2's SLI'd and the game looks great but smoke from burning vehicules, buildings..etc... is very square like. Is this normal or can this be adjusted? Would this necessarily improve with a newer 3D card? Tanks, Colin.
Schrullenhaft
From what I've seen of the Voodoo 2's you're going to have blocky smoke even with the latest drivers. I recall one person saying that they didn't have blocky smoke with their particular Voodoo 2, but I could never confirm it. I've heard that people may have better luck (compatibility-wise) using the manufacturer supplied drivers rather than the 3dfx Reference drivers (though the Reference drivers may be newer). A newer 3D card would possibly fix this problem (there is still the occasional driver problem that may corrupt the smoke with some cards). If you don't have an AGP slot then I would suggest either a Voodoo 3 2000 16Mb PCI (if you want to gamble on the current lack of driver support) or a TNT2 16 or 32Mb PCI based video card. I believe you should be able to get either one for less than US$100. If you have an AGP slot then a GeForce2 MX is an economical purchase.
ColinL
Thanks for the info! So what your telling me is that if I go with a new AGP card, maybe the something like the 64 MB Radeon, my graphics would improve greatly with CM? Schrullenhaft
The Radeon is going to lack fog effects. I don't think that this will be fixed soon either, so I wouldn't suggest purchasing one and gambling on it being fixed if fog is important to you. All other features should work fine with that card. With more memory and a faster graphics chip, you could possibly see higher detailed/smoother bitmaps (if CM is downsampling with your current setup) Depending on your motherboard you may have varying rates of success (compatibility) with some of the higher end AGP cards. You may want to check the manufacturer's website, newsgroups, etc. to find out if anyone is having problems with your particular motherboard or the video card you're interested in.
