Armchair Screenshots T55

Nice read. The article is correct in that the streets scape's are far to pristine. Dust (lots of dust), pot holes, cracked gutters, crumbling buildings, lots of civilian vehicles and overhead wires are needed. Pictures of your friendly dictator are very common. Also this is an very old part of the world, the inner parts of most cities are like rabbit warrens with new and old buildings existing cheek to jowl and lots of alleyways off each main road. Cluttered is the best way I could describe Syrian cities, very cluttered.

Pity doing all that would drag the FPS down to to near zero and take another 5 years to code/model/skin smile.gif

Fenris, don't confuse Syria for Iraq. Iraq went through a couple of wars and ongoing... how shall we say it... conflicts. Most parts of Syria are untouched for many years, and since the game is depicting the "tip of the spear" it wouldn't make sense to show all cities as falling apart. Because they're not.

Having said that (and without yet having read the article), none of the maps in the current press betas is finished, and the scenario designer has a LOT of tools to add a lot of the "junk" you mentioned. No wires (huge framerate hit for something that is invisible at most camera settings anyway), but you can add close to 100 junk objects (we call them flavor objects) in the editor when creating maps. Such as this...

This is just one of two available panels showing the main categories. Each entry on the list then has multiple sub-options (sometimes 2-3, sometimes as many as a dozen) for different objects to choose from.

Good to see a "top down" shot at last... these are good for planning etc.

I think the main issue with it being prestine, is map design, rather than a game issue.

What we haven't seen yet is any examples of an old town where buildings are crammed together and their are alleys and winding streets on sloping ground.

So far it looks more Manhatten than Marrakech.

Peter.

Actually the game will have two civilian vehicles - a Lada Sedan and a Toyota Hi-Lux pickup. It would be great to have more variety of course, but that's it for the moment. You can mark the vehicles immobile or destroyed or burning and place them on the map if you like. (if you keep them ok, then anybody can jump in and drive away of course, too smile.gif )

The only reason you didn't see this yet is again because of unfinished textures.

Is a minor point. I've been to Syria twice so am speaking from my own experience. It's not war damage, just general dusty/poorly maintained/careless and haphazard planning mess. It's cleaner now than back in the 90's but for example they built a dam across the Euphrates river near Allepo with the help of the Russians. Huge project. It's finished now and you should see the mindbogglingly huge junk yard of construction machinery that's just sitting out there rusting away.

Am glad you've included the flavour stuff. Of course frame rates and game play a more important than eye candy so as I said is very minor point.
