Alfatwosix
Now, this may be a long shot, but I have to check this... A couple of weeks ago I got CMAK (very happy) and installed it on my SONY VAIO PCG-GRV550 with P4 2.4GHz, 512 Mb RAM Since I kenw there was an issue with the VAIO's, I had downloaded the demo previously and it ran without problems. Before this, the computer was running without any problems, work and fun related programs ... Immediately, I experienced problems, in that, when running the game, the computer would just crash (total shutdown). Now, in the beginning this was just with CMAK.... I managed to get some PBEM games going, by switchng off all other programs running and keeping the session short. Things got worse though... with more and more games I stated experiencing the same problem (SC, CMBB, Europa Universalis 2...) and now even at work when running anti virus and outlook.... Thinking there might be a problem with over heating, I took the laptop for service and there they could find nothing wrong with the ventilation, so they decided it would be software related and did a re-configuration of my C-drive (hate that when it has to be done...always amazes me how much has to be re-configured)... Anyeway, that does not seem to have helped as last night I crashed again during CMBB (not even CMAK...) Could there be a link? Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance for any advice/help I can get..
Schrullenhaft
Not sure what to suggest. Does the laptop feel very warm when it 'shutsdown' ? If it does it may be overheating (what you guessed). CM does run the CPU at near 100%. This may be too much for some laptops that don't have the cooling capacity to handle such constant CPU usage. Some laptop manufacturers may assume a much shorter duty cycle for the CPU (especially on battery power). I'm not sure how the heatsink/heatspreader is mounted for the Sony VAIO's, but you may want to have your warranty vendor double-check this since you're running into far too many problems (especially with a 'clean install').
Alfatwosix
Thanks for the reply. Yes it does feel warm, the problem though is that now all programs seem to be affected...ran a Norton virusscan last night and came out with nothing..... Not sure what you mean with heatspreader though... Problem is that here in Jordan, where I am currently working, there is no Sony service...so I had to take it to PC-zone...
Schrullenhaft
Heatspreader=heatsink. The term heatspreader is used with some laptops since it may cover a significant surface area - much more than most traditional desktop heatsinks. Laptops can often feel 'warm'. The problem is determining when it is too warm, which may be a bit of a hazy distinction. You can try one of these System Monitoring Utilities, especially Motherboard Monitor. I have no idea how accurate they may be with your laptop. If it is a case of overheating, then I'm not sure what you can do in Jordan. Sony service would probably require you to mail your laptop to Israel, Egypt or Europe (or quite possibly the country you orginally purchased the laptop from).
