video cards for CM II?

Recommended Posts

I assume by CMII that you're actually referring to CM2/CMBB; so my comments later in the post are directed by this assumption. If you're asking about the engine rewrite that may be hard to tell at this point. I don't know what BTS's plans are for the PC for the new engine. On the Mac they will probably drop the RAVE API and use OpenGL since that is the API that Apple is supporting (and is necessary for OS X). As for the PC I'm not sure if they'll go to the OpenGL API or remain with DirectX (since Microsoft no longer directly supports OpenGL itself).

I don't think that there is anything on the market that is going to give you high performance and lack possible problems in CM. The latest NVidia drivers have problems with FSAA in CM and under Win2K they exhibit a strange "text transparency" - otherwise they work fine. The ATI Radeons (newer models are coming out soon) don't support fog-tables under DirectX (at least to the level that CM requires to display them). The Kyro II's (Hercules Prophet 4000/4500) offer some good performance - possibly the best in regards to CM, especially for the price (though they lack T&L features to the extent that the GeForces have - but that isn't an issue for CM), but they have some text display problems with the current drivers. That's the extent of the high performance video market on the PC (to my knowledge).
