klapton
I have a 3dfx Banshee, 16 mb, DirectX, drivers v1.04. Smoke graphics are quite ugly, nothing similar to what I have seen in pictures about the game.
Schrullenhaft
Unfortunately this is normal for the Banshee and the Voodoo 1 & 2's. They don't support transparencies/alpha very well and no driver version or tweaker will change this feature to my knowledge. This occurs in CMBO also. The Voodoo 3's and newer do support transparencies.
klapton
With my old banshee, I can see transparent smoke in CMBO, but not in CMBB
Andrew H.
I know you probably did this already, but have you tried adjusting the "smoke quality" (or whatever it's called) hotkey? I think it's Shift-I, but I'm not sure - it's on the hotkey list. It's at least possible that your smoke setting was inadvertently set to "fast and compatible," which makes the game run faster, but uses a non-transparent smoke.
Schrullenhaft
My comment on transparency support was based on memory. I can't recall exactly if the drivers actually supported transparencies, but displayed 'blocky shapes' in the smoke. I had to revert to a particular version of the 3dfx reference drivers to get CMBB to load properly (though it is still problematic) with a Diamond Monster Fusion card. Does CMBO smoke still look good and CMBB smoke look 'bad' with the current drivers you're using ? Which exact drivers are you using (4.xx.xxxx and the 2.xx version numbers) ? I've asked this before from you, but I've forgotten. Are these some standard drivers, OEM drivers (such as Creative or Diamond) or are they 'tweaked 3rd party' drivers ? Which brand of Banshee card do you have (the most common being Creative and Diamond) ? What motherboard chipset do you have and have you installed chipset drivers for it (though that typically should make little difference to transparency/alpha-blending support) ? I really wouldn't suspect any sort of differences between CMBO and CMBB when it comes to transparency support. What you see in CMBO should be the same as CMBB. There may be a slight possibility that the higher res textures of CMBB may reduce the transparency capabilities of the drivers (i.e. - not enough VRAM to support all of the textures and the alpha-blending feature at the same time so the driver drops the alpha-blending function).
klapton
I checked it again, and I get a curious result. With drivers 1.0.4 (Display drivers 4.12), and depending on the angle of the camera, I get either transparent or blocky smoke. This happens on both CMBO and CMBB. At a certain angle I get some transparent "clouds" and some blocky raising from the same burning vehicle. Building transparencies also fail at certain angles. This didn't happen with my previous drivers (1.0.2 I guess) on CMBO, but with them CMBB doesn't work.
klapton
BTW my banshee is Creative Labs. Drivers come from 3dfx.
