Schrullenhaft
Is this the CDV/Retail or BFC/Internet version of CMBB ? By "real time protection" you do mean anti-virus, correct ? When you say "everything crashes out" what kind of error is this; a blue-screen error, a crash to the desktop (and the app disappears) or is it something more catastrophic ? You can boot into Safe Mode and attempt to install in that environment (for Windows XP & 2000). Sometimes this is necessary since some drivers or utilities seem to run and interfere regardless if they've been "disabled" or not. Another option is to see if you can copy the files from the CD to the hard drive and then run the install from the hard drive. It may be necessary to run in Safe Mode to read the disc. If none of these solutions work, then it's possible that your new optical drive may not read the CMBB disc properly. If you purchased it from BFC, you can contact sales or support and they may offer a disc exchange.
Sivodsi
Hey I'm having a similar problem. I'm trying to reload CMBB but the computer just whirs (doesn't actually crash but it stays like this for a long time, I get impatient and ctrl-alt-del, and it shows up as non-responding. According to the thread below (about CMBB reloading), some computers have difficulty reading CDROMs with over 650 megs, so just be patient and wait. I'm going to be more patient and see if it works. I'll report back on my findings
Schrullenhaft
Have you disabled any anti-virus agents that are running in the background ? Have you tried (if you're using Windows 2000 or XP) running in Safe Mode and installing in that environment ? Some people have complained in the past of installation taking a very long time to start. I'm not sure what the commonality is to this particular problem, but waiting for the CDROM to eventually come up may be the final solution (assuming it does get that far).
Sivodsi
Results so far: waited 40 minutes but nothing happened. In an act of desperation I followed an opponents advise and just copied the entire folder from my old defunct computer's hard drive. I totally didn't expect it to work since programs usually install dll etc files all over the place in windows, but, hey presto, one working fully updated edition of CMBB on my work computer!
