caralampio
Hi, I'm seeking advice from someone more computer-literate than me. I installed a Pinetech TNT2 Nvidia PCI on my computer to see fog in CM. I'm having some problems with another game and Microsoft Knowledge base suggests that I install the latest drivers for my graphics accelerator. At Nvidia, for W98 there is a single driver to download that seems to serve all or most Nvidia cards (TNT2 included in the list). I've never done this before, can someone tell me if that is the right thing to download and install, and anything else I should know or do? Schrullenhaft
The latest beta drivers seem to be working fine for CM (and I assume other games). You can get the latest 22.50 drivers (Detonator 4/XP) from Guru3D. Click on the 'Videocard drivers', then 'NVIDIA detonator drivers' and then select the 'Detonator 22.50' for Win9x/ME (about the sixth item down). Select 'Click Here to Download', then 'Do you agree to this license' at the bottom click 'Yes'. On the next page if the download doesn't start within 30 seconds click on the 'If the download does not begin in 10 seconds click here'. You should now be downloading an installer version of the drivers. When this is done you should be able to run this file and it will extract the drivers for you and perform an installation of them via a wizard interface.
Cauldron
I have an ASUS V 6800 which i think uses Vida drivers... I upgraded to ver 14. x but it stiffed up CM - freezes etc. The old drivers v 3.79 work much better and are w 2000 compatable. Updriving drivers for the sake of upgrading is a BAD idea. eric
Schrullenhaft
If the drivers you have currently work fine for you, then no problem. But if you're experiencing problems with a particular program then upgrading drivers may be a good idea. Most driver updates are for fixing bugs and occasionally increasing performance or adding features. NVidia has set an industry benchmark with their Detonator driver family. They have updated the drivers so often and consistently, for better or worse, that they have put their competition to shame. NVidia often tweaks the performance of many of their drivers to balance the performance-shackling bug fixes. If you look at benchmarks for some of their drivers, you'll find that often some older drivers are faster than the latest ones. But the latest ones may have bug fixes or additional features/compatibility that the old ones don't. In this case caralampio needs a bug fix for a certain program (not CMBO in this case), which may have been addressed in a driver that is newer that what he has currently. Since his video card is not a GeForce, many of the newer features (and some of the bug fixes) are not applicable to his particular video card (a TNT2). Upgrading just to get the latest and greatest can be a bad idea, since some things get broken with updates, rather than fixed.
