Hi Madmatt,

I seem to have a problem with my PC freezing about once every evening (Usually when i am playing CM) ......now i am sure (Well positive actually) that the problem is not with CM but more with Windows......i do not know who else to ask in this commie country, its not like we have a PC World superstore with a friendly Tech support counter in the highstreet!!

So may i graciously ask for some advice? Let me explain the problem.

When the PC freezes i hit Ctrl, Alt, Del and it says notepad is not responding????? But i have not used notepad....Hhhmmm. I cannot end the task as the pc locks up at that screen so i have to hit the power switch. I have tried many things and i even went to the directory and deleted notepad!! but it still happens. As a tempory fix i restart the PC and hit Ctrl, Alt, Del to see if notepad is open and sometimes it is sometimes not, if it is i end the task and the pc will be fine. I do not know why notepad is running in the background in the firstplace. I checked my start up folder and it is empty - so it does not start from there.

Anyway although it is not strictly a CM Tech issue the problem effects my playing CM so am i justified to request divine advice from the God of all Techie problems and solutions?

I am running Win 98 SE - 256MB RAM - Athlon 900 - Hurcules Prophet 64MB.

The rest of the pc spec is not relevant unless you need it.

Your advice would be most welcome.

Oh dude, I did have this EXACT same problem and it took Nortons Anti-virus to fix it. Yuppers it was a nasty little virus that was slowing my whole system up and it had attached itself to Notepad.exe.

IIRC it was the W32.HLLW.Qaz.A virus but it if your are infected it could be a different one.

I had to delete notepad and reinstalled it from the Windows cab file. It is located in win98_46.cab by the way.

My reccomendation is do a full virus scan, make sure your virus definition files are up to date.

Also run MSCONFIG and go to the Startup Tab to see what is REALLY running at startup. you can pick and choose what runs at startup but be careful what you deactivate as you need some of that stuff! wink.gif

On my system it showed Notepad.exe being loading with a funky switch added was the the virus.

Good luck and let me know if there is anything else I can do.

Ahh, Madmatt my saviour to the rescue.

Dammit a virus eh? Smithers, release the hounds!

When i get home i shall heed your advice and install my antivirus (Dr.Solomons), its funny, on my old computer i had always kept my AV up to date and never encountered a virus, now i have this new mother of all computers for barely 6 weeks and me thinks no rush to install the AV software just yet! Doh! Doh! Doh!

Cheers Madmatt, i will let you know what Dr. Solomon turns up.

Madmatt you were right on the money.

I installed Norton Antivirus 5.0 and updated it on the net, i ran a scan and sure enough the nasty little bugger was attached to Notepad.exe

You were correct - it was a W32.HLL.Qaz virus.

All is now well with the mother of all computers. A cyber beer is on its way to you.

Cheers
