I am personally convinced that this image is one of the main things that sparks Ambrose's adoration of the American GI as he imagines him. And I stress that that image is very much a product of imagination. My own readings suggests that the American GI (along with Marine, sailor, airman or what have you of any nationality) was a much more complex, various, and morally ambiguous figure than Ambrose portrays him.
