Philippe
If the Germans had managed to launch a successful invasion, does anyone know where the UK government would have evacuated to? Canada? Egypt? India? South Africa? Australia? Was anything written about this at the time that gives an indication?
flamingknives
I believe the plan was that the Royal Family and government would be evacuated to Canada.
patboy
HMS "King George V" for the first time, then USA ! This is my own thinking! Pat
JasonC
Churchill promised that he would carry on the war from the empire, abroad, and had Canada in mind, specifically, keeping the fleet in being to protect the overseas empire, and awaiting American help to eventually win. "We shall defend our island whatever the cost may be; we shall fight on beaches, landing grounds, in fields, in streets and on the hills. We shall never surrender and even if, which I do not for the moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, will carry on the struggle until in God's good time the New World with all its power and might, sets forth to the liberation and rescue of the Old."
patboy
I guess Canada is the right way for the Royal family, but I think Churchill was also lord of Admiralty I vote first for HMS "King George V"! Pat
Philippe
I always assumed that the UK government would relocate to Toronto. But is there anything specific that we can point to? Maybe they would have been happier in Vancouver? Things were done on a much more improvisational basis back then, but you would think someone must have been told to check out available office space during the summer of 1940, just in case...
