Kobal2
So much to test, and so little time...
willbell
Sergi and Kobal2, After some thought I'm realizing you two may be right. The strength of my tactic lies in firing while out of sight. It does seem logical that tanks use HE on ATGs in direct fire. I think I'll run an experiment with different ATGs and tanks and see what happens, just to satisfy my curiosity.
Sergei
You better take a closer look and also see if the tank in question has any HE available. You can't even hit guns directly with AP, for that matter.
willbell
No way! I could swear I have fired AP at soft targets when it's the only thing left!
willbell
Next thing you know I'll be learning that the Brits wont fight unless you give them tea first.
Joachim
Of course you are firing AP when there is nothing else. After all it is better than nothing - they have some explosives inside, too. If my observations are correct, the ammo preference on soft targets is HE, HC, AP, T. Gruß Joachim

When it's the only thing left it will be used but the blast for an AP shell is very small and isn't very effective at taking out soft targets.
willbell
I re-read the statment by Sergi and I guess he means that you can fire AP at guns (if it is the only thing left in your magazines) but they wont hit them. Is this true? They just doen't have AP hitting a gun programmed into the game?
Sergei
That's right, no direct hits. An 88mm FlaK would of course be a nice target (also for HE). You can fire AP at guns, infantry etc. and inflict casualties with a bit of luck, but the way it is modelled is more like "very weak HE". It is a bit cheesy, I know.
willbell
Sorry it took so darn long to get dialed in to what you were getting at.
willbell
I can't help but think that an AP could be modeled like a real big bullet and cause damage to the gun. I do recall a scene in a book where a machine gun in a bunker was hit by a round and made a nasty clang/bang/thunk kind of sound (to the best of my recollection) as it slammed into the back wall.
willbell
I guess they could also model infantry spitting when bored.
vbfg
If they model spitting at the armoured front plate of the gun then these scope for the modders to do new sound effects for saliva hitting metal. I wouldn't expect penetrations there though. Except from the Finns...
Sir Uber General
May I suggest lots of shoot and scoot? Havent played the scenario but from the sound of it shoot and scoot with all your tanks ont he ridgeline for a few turn. Wait till they are most likley out of AT rounds, then push over the ridge.
