Maastrictian
How is it that the 37mm PAK gun's HC ammo penetrates about 180mm at 0 degrees? I thought (as a general rule) that HC penetration was proportional to the diameter of the round.... --Chris
Sergei
The shell actually weighs over 8 kilos and is fitted to the muzzle of the gun. Kinda like a freakish rifle grenade! Hans just put a picture of one here.
Hans
What I found interesting was that such a weapon system was still being used so late in the war - I would hate to face Soviet 1944 armour with that thing! But as they say, a spear can beat a machine gun if the situation favors the spear.

My suspicion is that most times it was not the spear that won though, and this was the same when facing the Soviets with the Pak36 in 1944. Simply not enough decent AT weaponry going around - but then again, given the choice between facing an IS-2 with the Pak36 or a Panzerfaust, I would opt for the Pak36. At least you have a bit more of a chance to leg it after you tried and failed. Incidentally, could that be the reason why so many of these guns are now in museums?
Bone_Vulture
The Stielgranate might have a rather disturbing penetration force, but it is also dead slow: it flies in a slow, ballistic arc. Securing a hit on first shot is a dream anywhere beyond 100 meters.
tools4fools
Bah, that's nothing. You should have seen the 150mm "Stielgranate"... There is a prototype at the Bundeswehr Museum in Koblenz. Wonder what the penetration figures of this baby would have been... What IS wrong in the game is the amount of that shells, and the loading issues. IMHO, the game handle such shells as "ordinary" ammunition. In real life, they had to be loaded from the gun muzzle, taking much more time, reducing gun consealment, and exposing the loader to the rifle/MG fire.
