Znarf
Forgive me if this is a dead horse... But what I would really like to see in CMX2 is a true campaign capability. This would make CMX2 the true KILLER APP of war games (not that it won't be anyway...) I enjoy operations the most, so I would like the option of being able to follow a "core battle group" from battle to battle or operation to operation. The campaign would not necessarily have to be linked (i.e., all maps done in advance). Perhaps CMX2 could implement something along the lines of the old dynamic campaigns from the venerable Eastern Front series (remember Talonsoft?) The campaign could essentially consist of a series of quick battles, with variables automatically adjusted for season (i.e., June-July-August for each battle (e.g., pick an option "2 battles/month" so after 24 battles, you're one year into the war). A core battle group could be, for example, a tank battalion and an accompanying infantry company. This would augment your points in the quick battles (and the other side would receive an equal offset to keep the balance). At the beginning of your campaign, you pick your commander - if he gets killed - its over. You may start out as a private, or a junior officer, and as you go up in rank by winning battles you have the option of getting more points for each battle (e.g., Sgt = 300 points, Lt. = 400 pts… General = 5000 points). So if you’re a general, you can command truly massive battles, if you wish. If you keep losing battles, you’ll eventually get busted or even courtmartialed (i.e, the campaign ends without you death). This seems like a relativley simple option to implement (forgive me, programmers..) Just a thought from a faithful purchaser of three of your products, Battlefront...
Lady Roxanne
I may be wrong here, but I don't think many "core battlegroups" existed in reality. Very small "bands of brothers" may have managed to serve months or years together; but I'd bet there was a very high turnover rate in combat units due to casualties. Somebody will correct me if I'm wrong. If I'm right, then what you ask for is unrealistic. That's a bad word to BFC.
Znarf
If realism is paramount, how many 12 man squads that were cut down by machine gun fire in WWII left only one body on the ground? I agree that an outstanding quality of the CMXX series is it's commitment to realism. But I submit the proposed campaign is not any more unrealistic than any one battle or operation... If your commander gets killed, he's dead and the campaign is over. Likewise, if he loses too many battles -he's on desk duty until 1945, and the campaign is also over.
Panzer Leader
Look: Would the movie Band of Brothers make an excellent campaign of CM? I think so.
Lady Roxanne
A Band of Brothers campaign....hmmmm. It might be interesting. Still, you would get one company for your core group. You would get no attached units to do the dirty work and absorb losses while your core gets the credit. That's gamey. You would get green replacements for your company...sometimes. I don't think your core would last very long.

Far more interesting would be to command a battalion - a self contained group with its own support - and have to parcel out what resources you thought were necessary for specific jobs during the day. Keep a company in reserve for night patrols while holding the line with two companies. Select which companies you want "up" when making a deliberate assault. Who to leave out of battle in case of a disaster and you need to rebuild. Which company gets your 81mm mortar battery in support? Which platoon of which company do you send on that fighting patrol tonight? Whose squad will go on that recce patrol? etc. You have two hilltops and a bridge to defend - where do you put your rifle companies and weapons support to do the most good? The enemy just attacked the leftmost hill and were repulsed. Throw in your reserve there in case they try again? Or hold them back in case the enemy is pushing through your neighbouring battalion at this very moment. etc...
