He was telling me about finding one of the SABOT rounds they found laying in the desert. But it wasn't the 76mm ZIS-3 gun depicted in the game. Funny, Germany picked up piles of this particular type of 76.2mm gun in the invasion but there's little info on it in German sources (unless linked to Marders), and practically no Russian info on their own gun! If the Russian had a great long-barreled gun with great anti-tank potential in 1941 why are we (they) stuck with the wimpy 45mm guns? 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest Mike Posted February 28, 2003 Share Posted February 28, 2003 The russians fielded the 76L51 as field artillery, not as an aT gun. the gun was not a great succes due to a number of factors - it was long and a bit cumbersom, it's had difficult elevantion and traverse controls, requiring an extra crew, and it was expensive. but it was the standard field gun in 1941. It was a victim of "we need something NOW rather than wait for something better lateer when we might be dead" that afflicted the allies in the early war, so the ZIS-3 eventually replaced it - a cheaper tube on a cheaper mount. 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
