Sublime
Exactly what do the L and the number stand for in gun designations like 88mm L/71 ? I know it deals with muzzle velocity but I want to know what the letter and number mean? I also know that the higher the muzzle velocity the better the gun usually, especially in tank fighting.. thanks
dalem
The length of the gun barrel in bore diameters. So a 75mm/L48 has a barrel that is 48 x 75mm = 3600mm long. -dale

A.E.B
Size is important when it comes to achieving penetration! Regards A.E.B
SgtMuhammed
Almost any size can achieve penetration if you use it well. Plus remember that often diameter is more important than length. Three_Oh_Eight
Must… resist… easy… shot… I give up! And don’t forget that facing matters as well; for example, penetration is often easier from the rear.

The problem is that most opponents are extremely reluctant to give you a shot at a rear penetration. It usually takes considerable maneuvering to make one materialize. There is some irresistible force that compels me to contribute to the corruption of this thread...

Olle Petersson
Don't forget another factor: Longer barrel => higher muzzle velocity => more accuracy. BUT Longer barrel => more barrel whip => less accuracy. These two factors have a tendency to cancel each other out, so guns with generally same design but different barrel length have about the same accuracy. Cheers Olle
