Too Many Mods...Head Exploding

Recommended Posts

Okay, there are so many mods out there right now, how about some one giving us newbies (and there are sure to be a lot with the new supply of CM:BO in stock)...anyway, how about a list of some basic MUST HAVE mods?

So fellas, what's the best (IYO) Mods in these categories:

Sounds:

Sky:

Buildings:

Soldiers (by nationality if necessary):

Terrain (break it down if you want):

Allied vehicles:

Axis Vehicles:

I know that this is a little generalized, but with so much out there, it is very hard to know which to get. I am looking for OPINIONS from you guys on what you use.

Also, I think we can all handle the Hi-Res, right?

And King Leonidas replied: "Then we will fight in the shade."

You'll wanna pick up Marco Bergman's Shermans & Stuarts for sure. And check out Gordon Molek's camo versions for the British Sherman's as well. They put to shame what came with the game.

But hold off on these for about a week or so. Marco is on the verge of releasing the total Sherman Pack. It will include many options for all of the US, Free French, British, Canadian, and Polish Sherman and Stuart-based tanks.

For soldiers, I'd definately pick up DD's Uni Pack for it includes all new uniforms for every troop type in CM. Very nice mods there.

For buildings, you'll probably want Panzertruppen's Buildings, these are the ones that are featured in about every screenshot you will see lately.

For Terrain, I use DD's terrain elements (trees and tree bases) but I use a version of Velvet grass for grass, but DD's snow.

Much as I love the different vehicle and uniform mods out there, the one mod I can NOT live without is the "Richard Tremblett's Velvet Grid" texture (with a subtle grid overlay). If you have not tried grid textures before, I recommend giving it a shot. The grid makes it so much easier to read elevations and fluctuations in the terrain. This is the mod they'll have to pry from my cold, dead fingers!

Magua`s new Normandy terrain is in development and may even knock DD`s superb grass, trees and bases off the number 1 spot. As for other stuff, Tiger, Marco, Gordon and Panzertruppen are the boys!

There are other excellent mods that supplement the above by many other authors, too many to mention in fact but you`ll find all the all new mod list at www.combat-missions.net. This will help you to locate every mod ever released.

Hey, you folks who love mods may want to try something I've been playing around with.

I think German armour should vary in camouflage. And sometimes, even the lo-res mods, I would like to play with once in awhile.

So I gathered the mods, and under my CM bmp folder I created folders called "tiger", "panther_g", "spw251", and so on. I then put all the mods in the correct folder, for example, I have no less than ten Tiger IE mods in my "tiger" folder, six in a Mark IV folder, and so on. They are all named ####_1.bmp, and so forth. And so on, and so on.

I then run a batch file before every game. The batch files visits each german vehicle folder, terrain, building, etc, and "cycles" the bmp graphics. When it runs to the maximum number of mods I have, it resets to the first and repeats.

Since there is an variable number of mods per unit, I never get the same combination. I run it every game, so when a particular unit shows up in a scenerio, I'm not sure what it will look like. But I love it none the less.

So there are many of Tiger's mods I've been wanting to play, and now I can. The system is wonderful for variety. Heck, I even put back the CM originals to add even more variety.

I do this with German infantry as well, since there are several uniform mods available. The building sets vary (I mix them as well), the terrain varies, and so on.

It makes me a real mod slut. I always want more to add to my mod bank, where every mod eventually gets used.....

The catch. Its a ridiculous amount of bmp copying being done. Its takes a little bit before you run your game, but hey, its worth the cost.

I'm still working on it and other things, but if folks would like an example of the batch files I run, I would be happy to send them examples. Yes, its work for you to do. You've got to pick your mods and rename the bmp's, but you do get to play with them all.
