Horncastle
Anyone recommend any good war novels? Ones with tanks in would be good! Cheers
Jeff Duquette
It aint a novel, but its an interesting read. Its about Tankers, and its free. http://www.tankbooks.com/tanksfor/tanks.htm "Naked and the Dead" is a very powerful novel. Not many tanks however. scooleen
go to the site www.feldgrau.com and read the stories in the section titled "kameraden". There is an interesting interview etc... with a vet of the grossdeutchland division who was slammed by a Joseph Stalin tank, and survived. Have fun. Ellros
Futuristic, but still good reading is David Drake's "Hammer's Slammers" series. He served with the 11th Armored Cav in Vietnam, so he's got a good background for armored tactics.
Guest Headcount
Ken Tout's 'Tank'is absolutely superb. His vivid recollection of 48 hours of battle in a Sherman around St.Aignan in Aug 44.
Monte99
"The Naked and the Dead" and "The Thin Red Line." Both definitive novels about WWII combat (Pacific theater), and literary classics as well. James Jones' "Thin Red Line" has little to do with the movie of the same name, by the way... Monte99
... and Stephen Ambrose's "Band of Brothers," while not a novel, is getting rave reviews. Follows a company of the 101st Airborne through the latter days of the war...
Stuka
Look for "The Forgotten Soldier", a true life story of a Frenchman fighting for the Germans on the Eastern front. A great read! (I've read it twice now)
sellsj
I liked Soldiers of '44 and Hell has no Heroes both set in the European Theatre of WWII. For the modern area, Red Storm Rising by Clancy and Team Yankee.
rlh1138
I second the 'Red Storm Rising' vote. Pure fiction - but good view of somebody's idea of modern Soviet combined arms vs. NATO. If you want some non fiction try 'Blackhawk Down'. Makes me glad I got out.
sellsj
Hell has No Heroes is about a armoured infantry battalion starting with DD Sherman at the Normandy Landing (Omaha beach) the end of the war. The tank is named Barbara. I stopped and checked my books and found I still had the book. It was written in '64 by a Wayne Robinson.
Forever Babra
Ya can't go wrong with "Gunner Asch". ------------------ Is "patheti-sad" a word?
Guest Mirage2k
I'll second the vote for "Black Hawk Down." An amazing non-fiction work about a joint U.S. Army Rangers and Delta Force operation in Somolia. I gained a lot of respect for those guys after reading it. BTW, I heard it's going to be a movie some time in the near future. But by Jerry Bruckheimer...ugh. -Andrew ------------------ "No, it's not that kind of relationship. We're just friends. A great read! (I've also read it twice, but there's a never ending debate about it's authenticity. Real or not, is really good). von Lucke
Subject: War Novels with Tanks (as in fiction). Try Red Army by Ralph Peters (ex-Army Intel analyst specializing in Russian Affairs). Written in the late 80's, it's about a Soviet invasion of Europe circa 1990. Very good read.
