Runyan99
Did every member of the squad carry ammo for the BAR, as was done for the LMG in a German squad, or did the BAR gunner carry all of his own ammo? Just wondering.
Sergei
Damnation, I thought this topic was about some sort of man-portable mini bar all US squads had...
BloodyBucket
The BAR gunner was issued a belt to carry magazines, the early belts even had a metal plate on them to assist in firing from the hip. In actual practice, my father tells me that everyone carried a few extra mags for the BAR, at least in his outfit. ------------------ "Roll on"
Roach
Re: BAR and ammunition. Theoretically, every rifle squad had a BAR man and an assistant BAR man. Both men, again theoretically, were equipped with the BAR belt, enabling a total of 24 magazines to be available for immediate use, with the assistant using bandoliers for his own [rifle] ammunition. The BAR belt with the built-in butt rest was a First World War legacy.
