Mr. Clark
What exactly is the German Motorcyle that they scoot around on in the end of Saving Private Ryan? And is it in the game? Thanks!
Lindan
It's called a "Kettenkrad". That's about everything I know about it. It's not in the game. Yet. ------------------ visit lindan.panzershark.com member of the Combat Mission webring
Mr. Clark
Thanks! Too bad it's not there, it would have made a nice scout. (although I always play Allies, so I would not have been able to use it anyway...)
IntelWeenie
IIRC, it was originally designed and used to tow aircraft around and was also used as a (small) prime mover by the army. ------------------ Cats aren't clean, they're covered with cat spit. MikeT
The Kettengrad was also supposed to be the prime arty mover for the German airborne forces. Some were even used in Crete to move ATGs and other light arty. I think, and would have to check my ref books, that they transported the RR arty. I do wish that the game included the Kettengrad. I wanted to do a Crete battle since all the infantry and light arty is in the game that was used in the battle. MikeT
Johnno
In "saving private ryan" i'm sure they refer to it as the rabbit "to give a chase" were they referring to it metaphorically or is 'Rabbit' a nickname for it? I'd assume the latter. By the way anyone play Wild Bill's scenario of that movie? I played it, and it was good, although I'm thinking the main street where they do the ambush needs to be redone to recreate that ambush factor. I just couldn't set my darn men up properly to ambush up close they'd always fire on them when the germans first entered screen on turn 2. Guest Big Time Software
We didn't include the Kettenkraftrad (SdKfz 2) because it is in the same class of vehicles as motorcycles and other non-combat vehicles of marginal value to CM from a historical point of view. The fact that I have a 1/35th scale model of one on top of my monitor, have emailed with a guy that owns three, and have even toyed with finding out how much the asking price is for one that is on the market (I estimate about $50,000 at the very least) did not change my mind that they really have no place in CM from a historial standpoint. Major uses for the Kettenkraftrad... Small capacity transport in difficult terrain. They had a small utility trailer and were used to haul food, medicine, and even a wounded man or two. They could also be used to ferry specialists to jump off points. Airplane towing Communications wire laying General liason work between HQs I am unaware of them being used, in any standard way, as recon vehicles. And Lord knows how these things would be abused if they were included in CM Steve

Mr. Clark
Thanks Steve! ...and since they were not historically used as Recon, I imagine you are CORRECT about them being abused massively if included in the game.
