Guest Madmatt
MDMP-2 is expected to have more 'flaggy' style flags as well. There will be option to install either the 'German Original' or "German: we want this game to be sold there too!" style flags... RMC
No one has ever given a good reason why VL markers need to be National flags. The unit markers for units that have been spotted and then go out of line of sight are not national flags. Why do the VLs need to be one. This whole issue could be sidestepped by choosing something else. People who think that they are somehow striking a blow for realism are deluding themselves when they get the original bitmap. I can think of two scenes from WWII history where flags were raised: Berlin 45 and Iwo Jima.
Lorak
RMC, It really comes down to this. I think the old flags look better. Using flags for victory locations is just easier. Almost every war game I've evrplayed and most war books I have show Teritory under control with a nations flag. I would like to hear your suggestions on what should be used in place of flags. American ( I assume you just want the star) German ( maybe just the iron cross) Britan (the bullseye) Poland ( ? ) Canada (maple leaf... wait that is their flag) Free French ( ? ) It is just easier to use the flags. Zamo
Yeah, I can sympathize with anyone who finds the original flag offensive, but I say to them: Don't use it! I don't find it offensive, I find it historical. The current flag isn't even a real flag! It was never flown anywhere during the second world war. It is a politically correct knock-off of the German battle flag. I find that sort of revisionism offensive. As to using some other marker? Yeah, I suppose it's possible, but if I want to smash Nazi aggresion while playing the allies, by god, let me smash Nazi aggresion. And if I want to purify the world of bolshevism, than let me immerse myself accordingly. It's history. Don't change it. All nations have bad things to hide. National Socialism is as dead as Hitler. A flag in a game isn't going to bring it back. PS> Can somebody e-mail it to me as well? Zamo
IntelWeenie
I agree that the original (real) flags should have been used. This, after all, is a HISTORICAL simulation and should relfect history as it was, not how we wish things were or what conditions are like today. The Japanese used flags quite a bit. The most famous pix I know of that would be from the fall of Corregidor.
von Lucke
For those of you who have the original demo, it's bitmap 440. And tho I usually play with victory flags off, I like being able to toggle on the swastika when I need to inspire my men into attacking something... RMC
Soldiers didn't raise their national flags in the middle of battles to mark gained territory. All the arguments for these flags revolves around this fallacy that having them somehow adds to the "historical accuracy" of the game. VL markers are a game device. They have no historical counterpart, therefore they cannot add to the accuracy of the game. In fact, they detract from it. The poles have a nice red and white checker pattern: The Free French would have a cockade similar to that of the Brits:
Formerly Babra
For Free French I'd opt for the Cross of Lorraine. For Poles, the national eagle. Just my personal prefs. If I don't like the ones that are there, I'll just change 'em.
Lee
I tend to prefer historical flags, myself. Does anyone have the original flag file posted on their site? Then it would be an easy DL for those that want it.
Lorak
RMC, I think we are arguing two diffrent points. I'm stating that on most maps nation flags are used to represent territory gained. I'm not saying everyone went around raising their flags after a battle. I don't understand that argument. In case your wondering the flags are just to let you know whats important and who controls it. There really aren't 300 ft. flagpoles all over europe waiting for people to run a flag up. Lorak
As for the flags on my site. They are located under the downloads section. The link to download them is "Old German Flags". The file is flags.zip Just unzip the file and there are two .bmp's one for small victory flag and one for large. Just send those to your bmp folder. I can grab them fine from work. Is anyone else having a problem?
