Bob I
It has been great reading about(and anticpating) the new version of TacOps. Dare I hope that the new version will allow me to play against the AI as OPFOR? Either way, I am "in" and plan to send in my money as soon as the game becomes available (but as much as I love the game, I hope that the Major does take some R & R.
Missionman
Same here, but despite the fact that i just paid for v.3 i hope that v.4 is going to be out soonest. Playing as OPFOR is also a great idea, the more choice the better since it let's dedicated players play with OPFOR (read: Eastern block) tactics. Long live TAcOps!
MajorH TacOps Developer
>Dare I hope that the new version will allow me >to play against the AI as OPFOR? Alas, your hopes are dashed. But ... the new TCP/IP networking feature allows easy and fast play against a human opponent via the Internet. You are linked to your opponent in real time. You both do your orders phase and combat phase simultaneously (WEGO) so the flow of the game is the same as if you were playing solitaire.
MajorH TacOps Developer
>despite the fact that i just paid for v.3 i hope that v.4 is going to be out soonest ... Thanks for not waiting for v4. The willingness of many people to repurchase the game roughly annually is the main reason why I have been able to keep the game available and evolving for almost eight years. That and the military contracts .
Treeburst155
I'm in for TacOps 4!! The improvements/additions over 3 are easily worth it. Thanks for setting us up with a new TacOps, Major. Treeburst155 out.

Phil Squair
Major H: I stipulate that your military contracts are substantially larger than "private sector" purchases. Now to my question... ...I am a relatively lame solitaire player. I love the game because it of its unique interface and credible treatment of the subject matter. I believe -- and I think I speak for the entire TacOps community -- that you have done a great job building the credibility of the game both from a technical standpoint and a gaming standpoint. [Aside: don't you love how when someone asks a question and the sum total of Major H's answer is "Correct program response"? End of subject.] Anyway, I read with worry Major H's response about how the v4.0 will not allow for solitaire play as OPFOR. Is anyone else out there worried that game development has been driven by military contracts rather than playability considerations? FYI, I play significant numbers of other games via PBEM and have managed 2 on-line wargame ladders Thanks, Phil "Lame Gamer" Squair
MajorH TacOps Developer
> Aside: don't you love how when someone asks a question and > the sum total of Major H's answer is "Correct program > response"? End of subject. Actually ... what I normally say is "That is correct program behavior" . It isn't meant to end a discussion, it is just presented as my two cents worth. > I read with worry Major H's response about how the v4.0 will > not allow for solitaire play as OPFOR. Periodically I have to stop adding new things and sell something for a while. I can polish the Army product into a retail version in a few more months. If I moved OPFOR solitaire play up to the top of the wish list then I would probably still be working on v4 in Dec of 2002. > Is anyone else out there worried that game development has > been driven by military contracts rather than playability > considerations? That should not be a worry. 16th Cav isn't going to pay for an unplayable sim . Their interests are not really all that different from the interests of the hobby users. I will admit that they have very little interest in playing OPFOR, but perhaps a Russian contract will appear someday.
Jeff Gilbert
All this is well and good ... here is what I would look forward to in a future TacOps release. The ability to take a map and create a new scenario on it. Starting Forces, entry times, OPFOR [AI] Missions for solitare play ... the whole works ... I know it is not on the table for TacOps4 or possibly in the near future but, that is my personal desire. 'Till then, Major, I am very happy with your current incarnation at TacOps3 and I look forward to TacOps4.
Bob I
I intend to purchase TacOps whether or not I can play Opfor (if for no other reason than to keep supporting such a great game). Dare I hope, however, for new scenarios?
MajorH TacOps Developer
The two things most likely to be worked on after the Army accepts TacOpsCav v4 and before TacOps v4 is released are new scenarios and a scenario creation tool. I can't predict how successful I may be with the scenario tool.
hellfish
Hi Major I'm a long time TacOps player - since 1994, actually - and am looking forward to TacOps 4. As a small request, if not for this version then a later version, could you add Chinese PLA units and weapons for the OpFor? You know, Type 59s, Type 85M-II, YW309s, etc. Thanks!
Jeff Gilbert
Major, For new scenarios, is it possible to give you some input? If so, what specific information would you require in order to code a new scenario? I still expect you to take a break / vacation after the Army version is complete ... Lord knows you deserve it! Jeff Gilbert
Oh, one more thing ... I noticed all the new units in TacOps3 but I have been unable to locate any new Unit Values. The User's Guide give the original values. Am I looking in the worng place?
MajorH TacOps Developer
I don't think the PDF User Guide has values for units added after the release of v3.0.0.
Jeff Gilbert
After posting my last message I realize I was not very clear in my question about the relative unit value numbers. So, let me try again. Where can I find the unit values for units added in TacOps3? Sorry for the confusion ... Jeff

Jeff Gilbert
I promise this will be the last time I try to phrase this question. I know that Appendix E give the Lethality Values for units. My question is: Where can I find the Lethality Values for units like the M1060, M1A2SEP, MV22, M121 that were all added AFTER Appendix E was created? Again, I promise to never raise this question again! ... honest ... no, really, I mean it this time.

Treeburst155
It's gonna be good!! Well, Henk, you think we'll be doing 4 hour sessions of TacOps again?
