Analysis is that it did indeed catch fire easily and crews would surround it with water containers in order to reduce the risk of fire if hit. That was until wet stowage was introduced. They also conclude that it wasn't a particularly good tank. But, it was reliable and able to be produced in large quantities. Around 55K were produced. More than all the German tanks produced combined. It may have taken 5 Shermans to match one Panther or Tiger. But, the troops were much more likely to have 5+ Shermans available than the Germans were likely to have 1 Panther or Tiger.
