Did you manually do the fire mission or did the TacAI waste the ammunition?

I had the Vulcans auto-firing - I wasn't aware you could manually choose air targets (new to the 'new' games!). How do you do that?!

I don't know either, usually the TacAI takes out enemy units.

you can't.  The best you can do and I highly recommend this, with stinger crews is in some scenarios you have a bunch of them, mount half in vehicles so they won't fire.  They will burn through their ammo supply really fast to no real benefit otherwise

And unlike most units it's best to NOT load em up with spare missiles as they will fire the lot very quickly, and then you are helpless.

I think that's why the Soviets liked to build them low!

That makes sense. Low and wide (with minimal ground pressure) for the mostly undeveloped terrain they were intended to fight in

Thank you - I'll be sure to do this! Any advice with gun-based AA like the Shilka and M163 Vulcan? It would be pretty nice if you could set "anti-aircraft arcs" or something to help eliminate over-application of 20/23mm dakka (and if helicopters were displayed in the game - a man can dream!).

Thank you as well - I'll definitely be doing this from now on. I'll have to be wary of transports auto supplying ammo as well. Looks like they can auto supply units up to ~2 tiles away.

Outside of my screenshot was my lone Redeye trooper (gunner? missileer? specialist? shooty dood? I like shooty dood) who had just fired off ALL of his ammo as well. And as far as I'm aware, the shooty dood didn't score a single hit and definitely did not discourage the enemy one bit, because they remained in the sky doing gun runs and rocket attacks on me over the next few turns. It really feels as if Redeyes are just extra large roman candles.

No and in reality I assume they wouldn't hold back.  Not much sense holding onto ammo if the enemy aircraft is attacking your troops.  The stinger dudes on the other hand... volley firing off your entire ammo load for one aircraft is pretty excessive.  There are a number of things you can do to control their access to ammo and how many crews you have positioned to fire.  It's good practice to review everything you have and build a plan as to how to utilize those assets.  The US campaign has at least one battle that is a couple hours long and the soviets have significant air assets.  First time I played it I hadn't really experienced it yet.  I think I was out of AA within 15 minutes.  The rest of the battle was not fun.  😜

Two platoons of M60s destroyed in less than five minutes by the two platoons of T-64s under the command of Lieutenants Lemeshev and Schetinin near the town of Grieshof.

Comrades Lemeshev and Schetinin will be awarded with the order of Red Banner.

I really like how all those people in CM games have names. It makes it more personal.

Reminds me of good old "Theatre of War" where you could distribute experience and give medals to every guy after a mission.

In my experience usually the best performing units don't make it to the end of the battle, so most of those awards would end up being posthumous 😅

In the games where one can promote and award medals (eg Wolves Of The Pacific) it is an additional challenge and fun to see your new inexperienced men/units gain experience and abilities.  I think it greatly helps immersion to be able to ID and "care" about certain of the pixeltruppen units.

Recall wayback Close Combat, the Russian one? Forget, haven't played for years. But had this Pz III earn 5 stars and all the medals all through the campaign, they were ace. At some point they bought the farm, that was a sad day. I miss that.

Scenario G5 Storming the Castle from the CMRT F&R Campaign Broken Shields. Converted to CMCW, unit for unit.

A Pbem with a friend of mine, man it sure it great. I'm trying to follow the AI plans down the center through the field. It's working, using the tanks as a base of fire and advancing everyone under that.
