Underground Warfare

Not sure where this would go in current threads.

I was pursuing the internet and came across some information that the US Military has spent a considerable sum on training and preparing for war underground. Kinda surprised me. The rationale is this-drones swarms will make warfare above the ground highly risky in the future and thus its projected that much future combat will be conducted underground.

Our adversaries have also seen what happens when US airpower is applied and they too have come to the conclusion that going underground is the way to go. Additionally the world is becoming more urbanized and sewers and other underground terrain will be used and fought over.

DARPA sent a request over twitter for proposals that related to underground warfare. It was picked up and combined with the recent creation of Space Force some started to put out rumors it was to fight aliens!

I would assume that China has constructed elaborate underground facilities in the islands they are occupying. Taiwan probably also has a maze of underground tunnels and facilities. The terrain definitely is conductive to that and they have concluded that going asymmetric against China should they invade is the way to go.

That brings me to the Ukraine. We see lots of tanks and other above ground equipment and trenches. It would make sense to me if they haven't taken the time since the last flare up to extensively borough underground. Against the Russian artillery, air power and tanks it would not only provide protection, but opens up opportunities to go asymmetric and in big way. Small groups of tank hunting teams suddenly appearing and shooting off Javelins at Russian tanks would be a serious hindrance.

Too bad Black Sea doesn't model below the surface warfare. That would be interesting.

I was in Seoul a few years ago. Just look at their subway system. It is just not for transport but shopping arcades, bars and restaurants. Seoul has a city underneath a city. We can see the way the world is going biological warfare will play a role.

while doing our office move I went from my hotel, past the old office and over to the new office all underground.  Damn good thing as it was freakin cold.  It was close to a mile.
