Need help: Last CMFI training mission

Recommended Posts

Aren't the tanks on the same radio net as the company/battalion HQ?  Would it not be sporting of him to tell them of the presence of enemy tanks?  (Perhaps I am assuming too much since the Red Army didn't even think they needed radios.)

Yes, I remember CMx1 debates regarding if your turret armor is weaker than your hull armor or your turret is a shot trap would it be wisest to just expose the whole tank rather giving them the most vulnerable target.

PS:  3am here.  I will read above links tomorrow.

In-game, it'll go up and down the chain, but not efficiently. No amount of radios will be as fast as some GI running up and have a conversation a little like:

"Oi guv'nor!, bloody Jerry tank right over there"
"Excuse me, why are you British?"
"Issa war, see, it does odd fings to a chap"

Do you get mortars or artillery?

You get both. Unfortunately for myself, my off map arty drove one of the PzIVs to retreat out of sight, and end up right in the middle of the woods that make up one of the objectives. Which of course I only found out when it blasted my attacking troops.

@markshot,

Thanks to your original post, I fired up this campaign (it's been YEARS!!!), and played it on Iron. Yikes. Battle three is TOUGH. But, it does teach some lessons. :)

I'm about 20 minutes into it and have just gotten the reinforcing Shermans. They have knocked out 2 Panzers in their first 60 seconds. One was due to positioning, the other was purely lucky shooting. (On the move, ~500 meters, front turret penetration.)

This battle teaches not to charge in.

Spoilers abound...

I freely admit that I fired up the first battle and, 5 minutes in, restarted. I'd gone in with a bit of, err, hubris. "Big ol' me, been there, done that. A little training campaign? Ho, hum..." And then I had my ass handed to me. :) Once I took it "seriously", I did far better. (By that, I mean applying the lessons I've learned over the many years of playing. You know...like tactics.)

Two total victories, and I'm starting the third battle. The German onslaught is very impressive. My men on 1056 don't stand much chance. The reinforcements showed just in time. I failed to realize that they (reinforcements) were visible almost as soon as they advanced. I did a couple quick "grab the whole platoon and Quick them 'over there'" movement orders. And that's where and when the German arty started landing. Never good to have two platoons quicking through the impact zone. Sigh. I was in a rush to get the platoons up on the line and did not follow good tactics...like only exposing a team or two at a time. I got punished. Again.

This training campaign is a masterpiece. My compliments to @Chris, the author.

Off to travel, so I'll have to leave the battle as it is, for now.

I had to try this one out as well, never gotten around to do so earlier. Nice little campaign :)

I might have gotten a easier rout to victory with the AI plan. In the final mission (spoilers), two of the PzIII charged forward straight up the hill to the paras defensive positions. They where quickly dispatched with grenades and a bazooka. It didn't take long for the panzers to button up with a lot of small arms fire and the 105 artillery mission hitting the hill and areas around the "German base of attack" objective( I used a slow ROF to keep the enemy attack broken up for a bit longer).

Then as the PzIVs moved forward, one drove up the slope to the house close to "German base of attack" objective. It never spotted the pack howitzer that killed it turret front from 470 meters with two HEAT shells.

Once I got the Sherman reinforcements I maneuvered three of them to my far right by the small house and orchard, from where they could get hull down positions. The remaining two where positioned in hull down positions on hill 1056. With the help of the infantry i spotted a second PzIV on the slope to the right (my right) of the "German base of attack" objective. It was buttoned up and I soon had all five Shermans with LOS to the position. One finally got a spot and shot it up from 450 meters (firing from an elevated position it scored a hit on the hull top armor), the PzIV never spotted its attacker.

Soon after I spotted a third PzIII just to the left (my left) of the "German base of attack" objective. Hull down and with a lot of trees between it and my two Shermans on hill 1056. My initial plan was to move the two platoons of supporting infantry up the respective side of the enemy objective and take out this tank with a flanking maneuver. But before this could happen one of the Shermans on hill 1056 got a spot and could kill the PzIII with a turret front penetration from 600 meters (I didn't expect that with the nice hull down position and much foliage in the way). It was also buttoned an didn't get a spot on its attacker.

I could then proceed with the infantry pincer and tanks in overwatch to capture the  "German base of attack" objective, no more panzers to be found.

I think the overall lessons here are to not rush in with the tanks, make sure you have solid spots on the enemy tanks with your infantry before you move in so you know you can get good positions to engage from. Try to have the enemy buttoned up so you have a spotting advantage. And use superior numbers when ever possible.

No cakewalk to be sure and its important to take the time to attack in a coordinated manor. To many times I have thought a battle is all but over to rush in and suffer horrible casualties.
