Heaven & Earth: Project discussion thread

US is a problem right now.....The current build is essentially a Red vs Red mod.

@37mm is the man in charge of TOE.....He's made some rather interesting changes to the whole structure of that area of the game, it is to say the least, quite unlike regular CM:SF2.

Ah, well Red choices are Combatant, Fighter, Mech, Armor, Reserve/Militia, Republican Guard, and Special Forces. So 7 in total as they haven't reinstated the Spy portrait yet.

Personally, I would be happy with just a few generic Asian looking one's that I can use to replace some of the worst placeholders.

However, ideally, the seven red portraits would be nice (I could even use a spy portrait for one of the tags)...

"Roundheads"

Combatants, or the People's militia, are a VC stand-in for Heaven & Earth. They can be tagged to look like just armed peasants. No face masks or helmets.

Reserve/Militia are the People's Army & are an NVA analogue... however, because there is only one helmet model allowed for most red troops, these fight bareheaded.

"Cavaliers"

Mech/Republican Guard... these are dubbed The Imperial Army & Imperial Guard. Together they represent a stand-in for some of the poorer ARVN units. They fight with US helmets.

Special Forces... the Airborne represent the iconic, M16 armed Imperial Cavalry & represent the better units of the ARVN.The actual Special Forces are beret wearing specialists & are very rare.

Misc

Armor... nothing too distinguishing as both sides could be using this branch, especially towards the end of the War.

Fighters, or Militants as I'll probably settle upon them being called, represent mercs, bandits & the like. These will be taggable to look like uniformed soldiers (for the purposes of allowing the regular forces access to our Jeeps & other vehicle swaps). No face masks or helmets.

@37mm

Here's a test I spent about an hour or so designing, this morning. I was curious to see what I could pull off after thinking about how I might approach it, last night. I took the Syrian Reserve bust template from the SF2 mod, replaced the helmet with a helmet from an FI template,  grabbed a Vietcong face off the net, did some blending, added easier to distinguish eyes, ran some hue adjustments on the skin and helmet, and threw it on a jungle background. I think they look pretty good. I actually prefer the one on the left but it's harder to see his Vietnamese-ness.

Here's the bmps. Right click, save and rename them to whatever you need and you can test them in game.

+1   :D  LMAO.  You spend about one hour just testing and come up with a really cool looking mod.   Your knowledge and skill with these portraits is truly impressive.  Good work as always my friend.

I used them both for the Imperial Army/Guard...

LOL. I noticed you have the Vietnamese Names created. That must of been a MFer!

Does it look alright on your monitor? I am on my old comp right now, connected to me 40 Inch TV and the colors look like crap. I only get the true color when I use my other comp and monitor.

Thanks, man. That's some sweet praise. Appreciated. It helps that I had just redone the Dutch three times, the Canadians 2 1/2 and the Germans 2 1/2. Plus I probably created and deleted over a 1000 pics for the SF2 mod so my reflexes are still pretty sharp right now. And I got lucky. I find that if I don't get something decent looking within about five to ten minutes It's probably gonna be a wash. The longer I spend on it the more likely it's gonna suck. Which you'd think would be the opposite! But if I can get a good looking face right off the bat (after I shrink everything) I can spend the rest of the time detailing and fixing any glaring problems.

They look great, color is okay to my eyes.

As for the names, we've had them for awhile, however, because the Sarge directed me to a fantasy name generator, it was one of the easier tasks.

Now getting the rice paddies to look just right that's proven a tricky task...

Made this guy for you today. Took quite awhile!

He ended up being a much different style than the first guy so I whipped up this dude to get a bit closer to the same art. Isn't perfect but fits better than the first one.

This is how I arrived at him.

If you're looking for some inspiration try this awesome site I've just found about the Australian involvement in SVN:

https://vietnam.unsw.adfa.edu.au/battlemap/?basemap=mapbox-terrain&layers=contact-individual&timeline=1965-04-30,1971-11-01&at=10.94051456370687,106.87067499999999,8

While it takes a while to load, it is worth the wait. You can toggle Vietnam era military mapping overlays, get action summaries by clicking on the red spots on the map, view geo-referenced Vietnam imagery and other analytics. If you get bored with the map, go to the home page and navigate your way around various articles about combat and heaps of other stuff. See screenshot to get a feel for it:

This has been bookmarked by me - a definite keeper.

@Combatintman  Do you fancy giving it a shot yourself.....We have the toolset for you to use.  ;)

Making the map in the screenies above is taking all my time at the moment.....It's pretty big, very complex & TBH, I'm figuring out how to do it as I go along!  :D

I'm time poor at the moment mate - @37mmhas already hit me up. If I get a window, I will be all over this project like a rash.

Cool.....Hope you have the opportunity to give the mod set a try, I'm finding it a joy to work with, but you do need to learn some new (and occasionally slightly counterintuitive) tricks with the terrain.  B)

@37mm  Had obviously been following the various threads where the difficulties of modelling jungle were discussed.....We have all the toys we wanted, remodelled grain or tall crops that can be placed as LOS blockers in jungle areas, many of them tagged so that we have different options for Highland or Lowland terrain.

Give it a look, I suspect you'll like it a lot (once you figure out where everything lives).  ;)

I think, like @puje, @Combatintman is waiting for a manual!

Amazing link BTW.

If we're discussing resources, I enjoyed...
