- Issue:
Referring to the Canadian Army's "Sniping" publication (B-GL-392-005/FP-001, dated from 2006-01-18), Canadian Sniper Teams (C3A, C14, and C15) may have an amount of ammunition that could be optimized.

From the aforementioned publication :

22. The detachment consists of two sniper teams, each equipped with a Medium Range Sniper Weapon (MRSW)(...)[or] with a Long Range Sniper Weapon (LRSW) for materiel targets or with a Short Range Sniper Weapon (SRSW) (...)

24. The basic ammunition load for a dismounted sniper detachment should be as follows:

  • a. LRSW (50 cal) Match round x 30;
  • b. LRSW (50 cal) Materiel neutralizing round x 30;
  • c. MRSW Match round x 160;
  • d. SRSW Match round x 200;
  • e. 5.56 mm ball x 900;
  • f. 40 mm HE x 24;
  • g. 40 mm smoke x 6;
  • h. 40 mm illumination x 6;
  • i. 9 mm pistol ball x 52;
  • j. Grenade, frag x 4;
  • k. Grenade, smoke x 4; and
  • l. M18A1 Command Detonated Munition (Claymore) x 2.

(...)

- Suggestions :

  • C3A Sniper Team
    • set the 5.56mm ammunition amount to 450
    • set the 7.62mm ammunition amount to 100
    • set the 40x46mm HE to 12
    • set the 40x46mm HEDP to 0
    • set the Grenade amount to 2
    • set the Smoke grenade amount to 2

  • C14 Sniper Team
    • set the 5.56mm ammunition amount to 450
    • set the .338 Lapua ammunition amount to 80
    • set the 40x46mm HE to 12
    • set the 40x46mm HEDP to 0
    • set the Grenade amount to 2
    • set the Smoke grenade amount to 2

  • C15 Sniper
    • set the 5.56mm ammunition amount to 450
    • set the .50 Mk211 ammunition amount to 30
    • set the 40x46mm HE to 12
    • set the 40x46mm HEDP to 0
    • set the Grenade amount to 2
    • set the Smoke grenade amount to 2

- add .338 Lapua rounds to vehicles' ammunition reserves.

- as other NATO Sniper team also have a similar basic ammunition load, the suggestions above may be applied to the German and Dutch Sniper teams.

+1   It's great when designers include vehicles that have much lower ammo load-outs.  But, it is a pain on set-up to dismount snipers or Red squads and remount (often having to split em first) just to get 100-200 rounds of ammo purely for the sniper rifles.  Same for smaller teams of 2-3 men eg HQ's, AT, AA etc.

Designers can also provide transports that have less than 100% ammo.  (They may then need to provide more transports so that there is enuff ammo for the other full size squads that do require 500+ rounds.)

eg: MOS did that in his superb Tactical Ops Center scenario.  But, most designers either don't know they can do that or can't be bothered.
