John Kettler
Long before the Automat of the AK variety was a gleam in Mikhail Kalashnikov's eye, Horn and Hardart's Automat, starting in 1902, revolutionized the restaurant business with its coin operated system. Now, we're looking at something along those lines when it comes to groceries. The drive-through grocery store! I have a kind of insider's perspective on this, having worked as a young man at an exhaust fume filled drive-through dairy. Machor
A cozy, welcoming place for fine dining: NKVD... "Soviet 'NKVD' restaurant name triggers Moscow row" http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-38302972 "A Moscow restaurant calling itself "NKVD" - a chilling echo of the Stalin-era communist terror - drew social media protests and the big sign outside has now been taken down. ... The restaurant sports a big portrait of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin. ... The barman strongly defended the "NKVD" name. "I really hope we put it back. Why not? People ask us why NKVD, but why not? It's NKVD and not Gestapo," he said. ... One Russian Facebook user, called Therese Philosophe, gave details of four Soviet terror victims who had lived at the address where the restaurant now stands."
John Kettler
Machor, At the rate things are going in Russia, they should've gone with the more straightforward "KGB" instead. The moment I learned "Iron Felix" was back out on his plinth in front of Lubyanka I knew what was coming. It was merely a question of when. Certainly trumps (note lower case "T") mine. But lets go back to, er, special purpose robots. Someone built himself a $50K one that looks a LOT like Scarlet Johannsen. In turn, this has led to headlines announcing such robots modeled on celebrities are the coming thing. It's also sparked discussions of the very real IP aspects. And since I'm on a female theme, how about lip gloss made from wine? Leaving femmes behind, would you believe part of a dinosaur's behind (far end of its tail, to be specific), has been found encased in amber. The critter doesn't fly, but it has feathers! Also, I think this supermarket thing has gone a bit far--unless you think it should be normal to find an ancient Mexican temple under one! http://video.foxnews.com/v/5236235755001/?intcmp=obnetwork#sp=show-clips Regards, John Kettler Edited December 14, 2016 by John Kettler
John Kettler
Mexican town fights back against kidnapping drug lord--kidnaps his mom! https://www.yahoo.com/news/fed-drug-war-mexican-townspeople-161623625.html And now for something truly different... No. It's not a man with three buttocks! Also, I came across this and was going to remark upon the criminal tattoo book of before, but the full body Yakuza tatts are but the tiniest portion of the revelations in this video.Be advised there's a brief sequence of Auschwitz type art in here, This may or may not be an issue. Pay attention to the political activities of the Yakuza. Recall reading some years back that the Yakuza's leash ultimately lies in the Emperor's hands. This makes sense, considering 1) the case made the Yakuza are the descendants, at least in behavior and traditions, of the samurai and 2) whom the samurai, save the ronin, ultimately served. I know something even more disturbing about the Yakuza, but it's not for here. Let's just say their weaponry far exceeds assault rifles and car bombs. PM me if you really want to know. John Kettler
While I suppose auction footage would be useful, the article itself is most interesting. The Law of Contagion as it applies to celebrity and collectibles OR The good, the bad and the ick! You wouldn't believe some of the things people will buy and why. Also, I guarantee after reading this you'll never think of liquor the same way again. http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/science/2014/10/celebrity_memorabilia_market_the_magical_law_of_contagion_explains_high.html But since you wanted something really unusual, look what I found in my sidebar while trying to find a good celebrity memorabilia video? John Kettler
That's not a pit bull on the attack, but one wanting to play. We had a brindle (the coloration of the dog in the video) pit bull named Conan, and he did exactly the same thing. Unfortunately for this pit, the deer didn't get the memo and kept sending back off signals. The poor dog not only didn't get to play, but wound up being forced to retreat on his own turf! Michael Emrys
I noticed that the dog did not appear to be seriously aggressive. Perhaps if he had brought a couple of pals along it might have played out differently. Dogs are pack animals, and in a group can be far more aggressive, at least if they are hungry. The deer too was not looking to really mess up the dog unless he had to, ergo feints without pressing home his advantage, although toward the end he seemed to have lost a little patience and at one point used a hoof in addition to antlers. If he had connected with that—and it looked like he was really trying this time—that could have hurt. I once read an account by a guy who had been mauled by a deer using hooves, and he said they are sharp and will take the skin off of you. Machor
To clarify this post: I see nothing bizarre in people trying to develop sex robots. What I do find bizarre is that there's an international conference devoted to the subject, and it took place for the SECOND time this year. Academics are truly the blue bloods of our times: "Sex robots: Experts debate the rise of the love droids" http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-38389862 "Would you have sex with a robot? Would you marry one? Would a robot have the right to say no to such a union? These were just a few of the questions being asked at the second Love and Sex with Robots conference hastily rearranged at Goldsmiths University in London after the government in Malaysia - the original location - banned it. It has proved controversial, not only to countries with conservative views. There were no representatives from the sex industry in attendance and no sex robots on display, leading some to question the point of the event."

John Kettler
Michael Emrys, You ought to read the remarkable comments about vegans and their effects to this Yahoo article describing the experiences of a standard food girl who went vegan for a week as a gesture to her vegan boyfriend. The descriptions of how plants respond to attack makes a good case for reducing vegan smugness. http://tinyurl.com/htldjt7 Guys, Google's ways are strange and mysterious, for somehow searching for vids about demons kicked up a sidebar full of hacks and bizarre experiments and projects. Someone with the handle MrGear has tons of such stuff. Take a look. Unfortunately, the subject of the video is really an also ran in terms of coverage. The front end of this one is a product video for what appears to be a relatively inexpensive high speed camera funded by a Kickstarter campaign, but if you skip to 1:30, there are 10 cool slo-mo vids. And if you need a rocket in a hurry.... Regards, John Kettler

Reminds me of something a friend told me years ago. The friend was a vegetarian (this was before the vegan craze took over) and an acquaintance of his once told him that the only way he could justify being a vegetarian was that he couldn't hear the scream of a carrot. I can't recall hearing any carrots scream myself, but I have experienced something that felt like the gratitude of plants when I watered them. And it breaks my heart to see a tree being cut down. It's like losing a wise old friend. Michael
John Kettler
Michael Emrys, And you are the richer for it. Please enjoy this, which is about work begun by Cleve Backster (inventor of the polygraph) but be sure to share it with the vegetarian you mentioned. That person should definitely also read Tompkins's and Bird's classic, The Secret Life of Plants One of the most remarkable discoveries Backster made was that plants could witness perceived crime and respond to the malefactor. If someone came into a room and harmed a plant, a nearby plant would spike on the polygraph if the person came back. "Your honor, I call the Dracaena to the stand." John Kettler
Michael Emrys, If you liked the plant stuff, this may blow your mind. Permanently. The microcrystalline structure of frozen water after simply being in the presence of various utterances. Dr. Masaru Emoto, formerly a water specialist, has given us, methinks, a great gift through his astounding work. Fractals don't lie! There either is harmony and order, or there isn't. The microscope slide with its frozen specimen tells the tale The effects can also be obtained by simply putting the water in an appropriately labeled container. That's on a different video. Consider this an intro. Regards, John Kettler

Machor
Taiwanese schoolchildren have truly outdone the Japanese with the whole Nazi thing - were they going for a Tiger I with that cardboard tank? BletchleyGeek
Let me share a taster from Randy's haul here: Christmas service accidentally prints words to Tupac's ‘Hail Mary’ instead of carol https://www.google.com.au/amp/www.independent.co.uk/news/world/christmas-carol-service-mixup-accidentally-publishes-rap-song-hail-mary-tupac-columbo-sri-lanka-a7494956.html%3famp [...] Some of the lyrics probably inappropriate for a Catholic service include: “I ain’t a killer, but don’t push me/Revenge is like the sweetest joy next to gettin’ p****" and “...Mama told me never stop until I bust a nut/“F*** the world if they can’t adjust, it’s just as well, Hail Mary.” [...] As a boy who had a proper Catholic education, I found this hilarious.
John Kettler
Guys, There is a wonderful Tumblr called World History in Pictures which has all sorts of amazing stuff, including a photo of a woman who survived being struck by a meteorite! The caption writer clearly isn't a primary English speaker, but the captions are good enough to figure out their meaning. Site will cause SAN loss, so be sure to sign ecstasy (not the drug) waiver on way out. http://photosofthehistoryandwithhstory.tumblr.com/ Meanwhile, some people should've stuck to model airplanes rather than real airplanes from kits.http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/3285244/Flying-enthusiasts-died-because-wing-not-fitted-properly-in-home-made-plane.html Speaking of planes, it appears that McDonnell Douglas over designed the F-15 by providing it with two wings. I know of a similar incident involving a single engine civilian light plane. http://www.migflug.com/jetflights/f-15-lands-with-one-wing.html For impressively detailed big RC models having scary-awful days on the flying field... http://worldwarwings.com/best-and-worst-of-2015-rc-warbirds-with-insane-crashes/ BletchleyGeek, Now, that would've been an unforgettable performance! I remember decades back when I encountered Stryper's take on Christmas carols. That would've been tame compared to the publishing goof you reported. Machor
This is how I wanna go! "Taiwan politician's funeral features 50 pole dancers" http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-38528122 "A Taiwanese funeral featuring 50 pole dancers has become the talk of the Chinese internet this week. Videos of the funeral procession, which took place on Tuesday, have been circulating online showing skimpily-clad women gyrating on top of jeeps in the southern city of Chiayi. The funeral was for local politician Tung Hsiang, who died last month. His family said they wanted to honour Mr Tung, who loved "having a lively fun time", local media reported. The procession, featuring the convoy of colourful jeeps blasting loud music, brought traffic to a standstill in the city centre." @BletchleyGeek Thank you for the link, and I also owe you for introducing me to Children of a Dead Earth.
