2nd Battle of Dommelin

Minutes 23-17

Sgt Houston noticed the Jagdpanther reverse quickly, and it was lost to sight as it backed behind some trees...and kept going.  Damn! Thought I had him!  Houston signalled to the Sherman beside him to advance. They were going to scoot up the far right flank near Valkenswaard and hopefully get a flanking on that panzer.....

Captain Chappy was getting constant contact reports and sitreps about the enemy activity. It was clear now that their main advance was coming along the river in the center towards the town: paras, panzers and at least one 20mm flak truck. Three of the four Jagdpanthers had joined the assault; the remaining one was still on the right flank where Houston was stalking it.  Chappy looked out the window of the building just as Cpl Newton's Sherman (his tank killed the ATG earlier) was destroyed by one of the approaching panzers. That was a lucky shot....he was hull down in the river bank!

On the far left, Maj Morningwood ordered both troops of tanks to surge forward to the edge of the woods and see if they could flank a panzer, albeit at long range. Lt Kuderian's troop crawled slowly through the trees and then sat...watching...waiting....no giant panzers to be seen.  Wham!!!  Kuderian's tank took a sudden, surprise hit, knocking it and Kuderian out of action forever.  How did they not spot the moving giant first???

Although the main German effort was coming along the river, Capt Chappy noticed some paras creeping up near the right center, in front of Deelshurk.  A squad of paras were crouched behind a stone wall. With satisfaction, he noticed that they were engaged by a 2" mortar, taking several of them out.

Screen%20Shot%202015-11-19%20at%205.48.2

But the main assault was now on. The Germans were moving steadily along the river bank. Chappy had ordered a 4 man lay back patrol out front near the Germans; they had inflicted several casualties, but then one of the Jagdpanthers, at close range, killed all four of them with an HE round from its main gun

Above: the steady German advance towards Deelshurk....they are getting closer. Here the Jagdpanther eliminates the lay back patrol

German artillery began to rain down on Deelshurk.  We need some relief...where is the bloody RAF?  Chappy noted that Sgt Houston and his Firefly had raced along the far right flank. Partial smokescreens had been created by friendly mortars, and Houston was giving it his all. He had chased off another flak truck, and he was about to try and out flank the one panzer on the far right.

After 43 minutes, the battlefield looks like this:

You can see the German main effort along the river.  Mortars are firing in there now and a 25lber mission is being spotted there. The enemy is taking casualties, but right now those panzers are not stopping for anything...yet.

2nd Battle of Dommelin

Minutes 17-15

As Sgt Houston's Firefly rolled precariously forward towards the enemy forces, he noticed a panzershreck team running towards him from the buildings of Valkenswaard. The turret traversed, and the tank's MGs forced the AT team to the road, bullets striking all around them. Then the main gun roared and Houston noticed the death of one of the team members. Take that!

Screen%20Shot%202015-11-20%20at%204.24.1

Above: a panzerschreck team gets shredded

Houston, and the other Sherman commanded by Nolan, continued to race forward towards the main road coming out of Valkenswaard. They split up, knowing the 20mm flak truck had just disappeared by reversing back behind some of the outbuildings.  Houston was the first to see it. He engaged it with MGs and noticed one of the 20mm AA crew fall off the truck. Once again it tried to escape by reversing, but this time the powerful Firefly shell blew it to pieces.

Screen%20Shot%202015-11-21%20at%2010.12.

But Houston glanced to the right and noticed a new, and far worse, impending threat. On the main road in Valkenswaard, he spotted two Pak40s and their crews wheeling their deadly guns up the road. He saw that one was still limbered, the other was ready to go. Fortunately his gunner also noticed this threat quickly and fired a hasty first round...but it hit a tree and exploded harmlessly. The next minute would be tense....would he be able to eliminate those guns in time?

Above:  Houston's gunner fires a first round towards the two Pak40's, but it strikes a tree...the Pak40 on the left is ready to go, the one on the right is still limbered

On the far left, another 20mm Flak truck was advancing with a Jadgpanther and the leading para elements.  It's rapid firing gun shredded a universal carrier parked to the rear of Capt Chappy's location.  An angry cheer was then emitted from the soldiers around Chappy, as the second 20mm Flak truck went up in flames from a tank round. One of Kuderian's tanks had taken it forever out of action.  Two AA trucks gone in one minute...just in time.....where is that Typhoon?

Screen%20Shot%202015-11-21%20at%2010.18.

Both friendly and enemy artillery was raining down. The Germans were targeting Deelshurk and inflicted some casualties, while the remainder of the 25lber artillery was dropping on the leading elements of the German advance.  And mysteriously, the panzers were pulling back.  What are they doing? Reacting to Houston's flanking? Crossing back across the river and attacking in the center?

Keep checking your FO's. The aircraft icon will become visible and when clicked should say "enroute" and show the aircraft type.

Also, you should get that radio squelch sound effect and across the top of your screen it will say either "Tiffy 1 has arrived" or "Tiffy 2 has arrived".

Chappy,

Arrgghh, cliffhanger....Did the PAK get a shot off?  Did the Sherman kill another tree?  We are all waiting on the edge of our seats.

Crazy action.  Those Flakwagons can be very bad for health reasons.  I've had troops shredded by them.  Looks like you did the shredding this time.  Good show!

2nd Battle of Dommelin

Minutes 15-11

Sgt Houston lost view of the two Pak40s; the errant round that struck the tree created a cloud of smoke...and Houston cursed.  He signalled Nolan in the other tank to halt and reverse, pointing in the direction of the German ATGs. Houston had a more pressing threat to his left...German paras were swarming forward towards him, and he knew those Jagdpanthers were coming....

Nolan's tank reversed and was about to engage the ATGs when a lone panzerschreck round was fired from out of a building and slammed into the left hull, igniting the stores of 75mm rounds, and creating a massive explosion that vaporised the crew.

Screen%20Shot%202015-11-22%20at%204.44.0

Houston had no time to grieve. Bullets were impacting on the metal turret, and he quickly closed hatches. The gunner traversed the turret and the turret MG engaged a squad of German paras, eliminating half of them and causing the others to hug the turf.

Screen%20Shot%202015-11-22%20at%204.45.3

Houston ordered the driver to reverse and turn right....and he noticed yet another panzerscreck crew. With one HE round, the panzerschreck team was blown to pieces....

Screen%20Shot%202015-11-22%20at%2011.01.

Above:  Houston eliminates another PSchreck team in a cloud of dirt

Houston next saw yet ANOTHER panzerschreck team!  That has to be the bastardz that got Nolan!  His gunner engaged the team, but the round struck past them.  His gunner then adjusted the gun elevation, but Houston saw the small trail of smoke from the German bazooka.  Wham!  With one shot the bomb penetrated the lower hull, killing one of his crew members and knocking his Firefly out of the battle.  Houston ejected from the tank and took cover behind it as small arms fire searched him out. he managed a quick glance at his watch...the RAF was late....5 minutes late.....and his flanking manoeuvre that was timed to coincide with it was all for not.

Screen%20Shot%202015-11-23%20at%2010.57.

Above: Houston's tank has run out of luck....and where are those planes??????

Houston glanced back behind him, towards friendly lines, and he saw the detonations of several small sized mortar rounds.  He watched one of the 6lber crews attach the ATG to the carrier and climb inside. As they began to drive off to another location, one of those mortar rounds struck inside the carrier, exploding all of the ammunition inside.  Lady Luck has turned against us...

Screen%20Shot%202015-11-22%20at%204.52.3

Above:  a small mortar round lands directly inside the carrier with horrific results, eliminating the 6lber gun

Captain Chappy was well aware of the encroaching panzers and paras. They had inflicted lots of casualties on the Germans paras so far, but the tank battle was not going well. He had been assured that two Typhoons were on the way....but they were already 5 minutes late and there was no sign of them   Damn fly boys!  They get to sleep in their beds every night and comfort our womenfolk. At least they could be on time!!!!    Suddenly there were loud explosions out to his far left, and Chappy noticed once again that Kuderian's troop was engaging the advancing paras and taking them down.

Screen%20Shot%202015-11-23%20at%204.08.1

It was turning out to be one long, bloody day.....for both sides

Chappy,

Geez, what an end to the cliffhanger.

  Nolan...:(

Then Houston can't stall the wave of 'schrek gunners.  He was lucky to get out.  They must be handing out panzerschreks like freaking candy over there.  If it wasn't for the schrek boys those AT guns might have been toast.

If...[and I do mean if]...the flyboys arrive, you better have everyone duck.  The way the rolls have been going so far, their appearance might be as much a blessing as a curse.:o

  Hang in there.

2nd Battle of Dommelin

Minutes 11-9

Capt Chappy knew the paras were advancing in numbers along the winding river bank, but it was only now that he caught first glimpse of them. They were an impressive sight with their camouflage uniforms and distinctive helmets. They still bleed.

Chappy had placed one of his platoons to guard against such a move, and it was now that the section to the far left opened up on the advancing Germans.  Several of them dropped, forever out of the battle, while others hit the dirt.  Then Chappy heard the "thunk" of the mortars, soon to be replaced with explosions in and around the German positions next to the river.  More died.  Will this day ever end?  With excitement, he heard the welcome sound of an RAF pilot....one plane was finally on its way here. He glanced out the window and saw the juiciest target for the Typhoon - two Jagdpanthers in an open field. Over the radio he summoned the angels of death from above....

Screen%20Shot%202015-11-26%20at%2012.25.

Above: paras advance along the river and are now very close to the Irish positions...here two paras lay dead from the section between the house and the paras

Cpl Noble and his 6lber crew were nestled in at the rear left corner of the town of Deelshurk. They knew there was a lone Jagdpanther operating somewhere to their front, but from their current position they couldn't see it.  "Move along boys, let's get this gun set up along the wall 20 meters from here. Hurry it up!"  The gun was ready for action, and it was easily wheeled along the dirt track behind the stone wall. As they came to a halt and swivelled the gun towards the front, Noble peered through his binoculars and instantly saw the monster not far in from of him.  He then heard the crack of the other 6lber gun to his left rear and saw the round splash off the front armour of the panzer. Not ten seconds later a second round slammed into the panzer with similar non effect. But then Noble saw the panzer reverse from the threat of the gun, and then reverse to the left, moving slowly towards the rear in an attempt to reposition.

"Fire!"   Noble's gunner fired the 6lber gun and the shell slammed into the upper left hull of the panzer...but it kept moving backwards....

Screen%20Shot%202015-11-26%20at%2012.17.

Being locked on to the target, Noble ordered, "Load the APDS round!"   Armour piercing discarding sabot - the one special round in his arsenal that could cripple one of these things. "Fire!"  Again the gunner engaged the panzer that was slowly moving to his right...

Screen%20Shot%202015-11-26%20at%2012.19.

Above: Noble's crew fires the lone APDS round.....

Screen%20Shot%202015-11-26%20at%2012.17.

The tungsten round slammed into the upper left hull, but this time the round penetrated deep and the panzer ground to an immediate halt.  Noble let the panzer have it with a third round, when he noticed the hatches of the panzer open up and the crew bailed out....but not all of them.  The soldiers around him were cheering.

We finally got one of those bastards!

For both sides I try to always follow a certain SOP for vehicles.

For the victors who take or retain the battlefield and then pass some die rolls, perhaps their vehicles could be repaired and could show up in a follow on turn.

Note: If it is a burning hulk then it is a goner.

Ah bugger. Good to see your back on your feet boss ;)

"And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, "O LORD, bless this Thy hand grenade that with it Thou mayest blow Thine enemies to tiny bits, in Thy mercy." And the LORD did grin and the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and orangutans and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats and large chu... Friar: "skip a bit, brother"... And the LORD spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it."

Or something kinda like that....:D
