When in deep discussion with a relative who stormed Normandy Beach and survived it, he said, " when he got up to the fence line in the dunes, there were what he thought to be American soldiers, but he heard them speaking German to each other". That gave them away. Good thing he heard when he did, he took off as fast as he heard that, started running. They shot him in the leg which he carried around with him his whole life on the farm. But, he made it back screaming to his buddies, Nazi's. Thankfully, he hid behind a piece of steel on the beach until help arrived, medic.
