Chris Jenkins
I noticed that German fortifications were covered in detail, but I did not notice any Allied ones. Are we simulating wodden bunkers for the allies, or were they too rare in this part of the war? ------------------ Climb to Glory!
Fionn
The allies have all the various fortifications available that the Germans have but given the nature of the war it'd be rare to be able to justify giving the US a concrete bunker with a 76mm gun (but it is possible) ------------------ ___________ Fionn Kelly Manager of Historical Research, The Gamers Net - Gaming for Gamers
Guest Big Time Software
Er, unless Charles changes something very recently not *everything* can be used by the Allies The various mines, roadblocks, barbed wire, and artillery registration points can be used by the Allies, while bunkers and pillboxes can not. Foxholes are of course OK for both, and optionally vehicles and guns can be dug in as well. So pretty much just bunkers and pillboxes. Guest PeterNZ
haven't heard about minees or fortifications or barbed wire in any of the posts so far, how are they used in game? What does one do to counter them or encounter them.. err.. more information ? PeterNZ (off to do a search on the topic too
Fionn
Oops sorry. I hadn't noticed the US didn't have access to pillboxes etc. My bad. Sorry guys. ------------------ ___________ Fionn Kelly Manager of Historical Research, The Gamers Net - Gaming for Gamers
Guest Bryan Corkill
And so what do I do with McDonalds first engagement, Which he spent almost entirely in a Bunker on the 'Seigfried' line? Some US commanders swore they were death traps, all the apertures facing the wrong way, most used them for shelter and cover, fighting from foxholes on the wings after the arty had lifted. Guest Big Time Software
Ah, MacDonald was a good read. Wonder how he lived through that! Rare was the time that a US unit was in a bunker in a CM type battle (billited, or taking shelter sometimes for sure), so we decided not to introduce this. The other problem is that bunkers are not treated like buildings. They are units. Once knocked out they are off limits to other units. Not totally realistic, of course, but generally once a bunker was taken out it was out for good (messy inside and often structurually compromised). We felt it wasn't worth rewriting a significant chunk of the game engine to support this odd case (which is what we would have to do for it to work).
