[WIP] Sapper Platoon Campaign

Recommended Posts

Hi Kieme,

Yes, to small battles. exactly.

Tagged mod, yes, exactly [sapper]!

Maybe a uniform modder can do an amoeba for the coveralls?

shot103_zps6bb64b53.jpg

OT tank, ....sure, why not.

Thanks for your modular building mod. I really liked the dilapidated look.

I edited and reused your broken glass windows for my burnt brick building. :)

Did you download and try "Rettet Soldat Reinhart" yet?

Brainstorming while at work...

Battle 1: mine clearance

B2: Trench assault

B3: decision point for human player

B4A: resupply at a town

B4B: secure a bridge and check for explosives

B5: assault on urban area day

B6: assault on urban area at night

trying to work in another decision point somewhere.

I am doing all my amoeba uniform work in another thread. Right now I am just exploring and poking and prodding. I like to use the forum because it leaves bread crumbs for myself and maybe others. I can see what I tried and if anything ever worked out.

But the actual campaign and battle development I will show here.

I thought of another decision point. As a note to myself, it will be a player decision to leave behind a squad in another area or not to. So, we get a follow-on option A or B. This is a very small scale campaign. So, this could be the platoon leader leaving one squad at a key point and pressing forward with the remainder of the platoon. Maybe we shall see the adventures that befall that lone squad at the creek crossing. For those who prefer the battalions fighting battalions, I guess this aint your cup of tea. Gomen Nasai!

I have been doing experiments with renaming files to try and get sappers in amoeba uniform alongside regular troops in M43 uniforms. It aint doable so far.

So, this means the sapper platoon campaign might dial up to Sapper Company Campaign. They will act independently on each battle. Or alongside armor support.

Before I was going to have sappers supporting overall infantry assault with both on map.

OK. I am officially blowing the dust off this campaign...

benpark has my photoshop files for the amoeba coveralls and he will TRY to get the wrinkles completed.

It is a skeleton file rename type mod so it cannot be tagged but must be put in z folder only when needed,

A little inconvenient but I think it will be worth it.

Everything I learned doing the CMFI campaign I will roll into this campaign.

Here is where I left off last July.

Battle 1: mine clearance
B2: Trench assault
B3: decision point for human player
B4A: resupply at a town
B4B: secure a bridge and check for explosives
B5: assault on urban area day
B6: assault on urban area at night
trying to work in another decision point somewhere.

Anybody want to join me on the factory floor?

Bring safety goggles and earplugs!

Thing about mine clearing and checking for explosives is, CM doesn't really feature these things. It would also be hard to get mission scoring right for these tasks, cause there is no way to award points for it. All you could do is work with Touch objectives maybe.

BTW I just read we are talking about a platoon sized campaign here. In that case the map I've posted would probably have to be downsized a little, or at least reduce the german position to a single squad.

Edit: I just took a closer look at the OOB of a Soviet sapper platoon/company. In terms of a campaign, I think it would be reasonable to include the full company as core unit and use both platoons for different battles though. Also, the regular sapper platoon doesn't really pack a punch. Only 9 SMGs and no MGs whatsoever.

Adding a specialist flamethrower team would be sensible I think (cause flamethrowers are fun), but either way, the enemy force couldn't really be much larger than a single squad, or one HMG and half-squad etc

Good morning Rokko,

I downloaded the vignette map. Thanks.

I do appreciate your comments. Believe me! I have also wrestled a bit in my "noggin" as to the best way to accomplish the campaign with good scenarios. The entire campaign was only going to get the greenlight if I could get the amoeba camo coveralls adequately represented. Thanks to benpark, I have recently had him do some photoshop magic that is beyond my brain capacity and skill level.

The scenario about bridge demo checks was maybe a tad over stated. You are totally correct. Maybe some touch objectives and the briefing pretense that leads to the real action of the scenario with some hidden Germans perhaps was what was in my head.

So, that said. It sounds like you might be interested in being on the "campaign factory" with this project or just as advisor and the vignette map donation? Either way is appreciated!

Sure, count me in. I have experience in all parts of the scenario design process. Only things I really hate are designing AI plans and coming up with victory point allocations. Painting TacMaps is also a pain, but with such small maps it's going to be fine.

But first I think we need a clear concept. Also I don't have the slightest idea what kind of tasks would realisticly be assigned to a single Sapper platoon. Probably none, because it is just not powerful enough to really achieve something, but for the sake of fun gameplay we can probably discard that. Most things that come to my mind would probably more suitable for scout or razvedchik guys. We could probably design sapper platoon attacks on single fortified strongpoints with a very limited number of defenders. Like attacking an MG bunker with barbed wire and mines in front of it that needs to be flanked without getting pinned down by neighbouring forces. Coming up with 4-6 different enough such scenarios should be doable.

I remember a scenario by JasonC for CMBB where you had to attack a single German HMG in a slit trench with a single conscript platoon. It was just a training scenario but it was a lot of fun to me, because in CMBB it was possible that there were completely false spotting results. Like you'd get a question mark in one place when the enemy pinning you down was actually in a completely different place.

Anyways, thats kind of the scope I'd have in mind.

The mine clearing scenario I would scrap, because until we get mine-clearing T-34s there really is no way to find mines other than stepping on them, that won't be a fun scenario. For a fun trench assault I am thinking of something like a small partion of trench section similar to the one in your Garden of the Iron Cross scenario, not very wide but with some depth, frontal assault with not flanking options.

What about having penal troops being sent over the field to step on mines and see where enemy is and then send in the sappers to mark the mines and then send regular troops to attack the enemy and thus finish the scenario?

Was that how it was historically or not?

Hm, I think thats mostly a myth like Russian soldiers being always drunk in battle or only having only one rifle for two guys. Probably did happen some place, some time but waaay overstated.

Which doesn't mean its a bad idea for a scenario though ;)

OK, thanks.

Victory point allocation is one area I need improvement on. It aint easy to have the scenario end with a sensibly titled result.

AI plans I am getting the hang of. TacMaps and such, no problem. I have a style that is easily made.

I will PM you and we can share a dropbox for kicking around ideas.

I am following what you say as balance of fun versus realism. I always say to have the semi-fiction or total fiction magic button handy.

This is dialed down in size to ease production time and labor and to cater to the market for smaller sized scenarios and campaigns.

It could be the first user made campaign I think. I think? No big deal if we are the 2nd user made campaign...

Good! It isn't a race. :D

I hope we are the 99th!

That could mean more guys are up and in the editor having fun and putting out stuff.

But it is better to have decent stuff uploaded versus 99 "Elvis Presley glow in the dark paintings"...  :D

I "feel" that the support assets for scenario creation are more plentiful now than versus CMBO times...

Anyways, here is some eye candy work in progress for the sapper campaign.

Anybody who wants the psd file, please PM me. Go knock yourself out if you want to play around to learn things or try to make an improvement or variation.

Right now there are at least 12 different Sapper coveralls we can show. Soldier thru soldier 8. nco and nco 2. officer-jr and officer-jr 2.

In the screenshot above, you see mine which is a lighter shade and a bunch of ben's darker versions.

Only one of the bmp images came from my work, the other 11 were all file renames of the same image that ben made.

I do plan to go in and swap out the belts and change a bit of weathering eventually before I would ever upload to GaJ.
