waltero
Anybody know of any? Viewing the forums I do not see any activity. Thought I might do some gaming this winter. Anything new that Battlefront has, that might include multiple players (game that people actually play)? TCIP is what I like Or maybe I just pick up where I left off...yammering in da General discussion forum...being that you all loved it so much.
Michael Emrys
Anybody know of any? For the last four months I have been playing Unity of Command and its add-ons Red Turn and the recently released Black Turn. It is in no way comparable to CM, being on a completely different scale and type of wargame. There is not the vast depth of research that goes into CM, but neither is it grossly inauthentic. Play is simpler and faster, and all in all I find it great fun to play. A comparison for complexity might give HOI ten stars, CM nine, and UoC two or three. Michael I would give HOI a 50 on that scale. Not that that is a good thing. It always baffled me how a game covering the whole world and conflict would use divisions as the operational units, and be real time. Its a fun game, but I found the eastern front to be unplayable. Far too many units to keep track of and move around.

But I never actually had command in that part of the game, so never ran up against the problem. For most of the rest of the war, except maybe the part in China, divisions do work best though. I can't see invading the smaller Pacific islands with whole corps or armies. Having a feature that allows the player to build up or break down divisions into larger or smaller pieces would be useful. I never played a game much past 1944—it would take me about a week of play time just to get that far starting in 1936—but one incongruous thing that struck me was that prior to having nuclear weapons, it is simply impossible to invade Italy. The Italians can man all the available landing spots to a strength that can't be overcome. Somewhat the same thing can be true of the Atlantic wall. The only time I ever had a successful invasion of France was when the AI happened to leave a coastal hex unguarded and I got ashore there. Clearly, the mechanisms for amphibious invasions needed to be revamped. There were a lot of good things in HOI, but then a lot of other things left me convinced that the designers' knowledge of the WW II era was very shallow and fragmented. It just wasn't like that. I think a large part of the problem lay in using a game system leftover from EU2. They really needed to start over with a clean sheet, as well as do a ton of research, if intending such an ambitious project.
