Question on unit building

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am currently running an Barbarossa to Berlin email game as German. In the first game I was defeated pretty quick - and one of the problms I had was a shortage of units (and over extension, but that was more a strategic fault). So this time I build as much divisions as I could, instead of a lesser number of corps. I actually build all the divisions I was allowed to build.

Due to sneaky tactics and lots of luck (of course :) ), my opponent managed to destroy two of my Panzer units and four of the divisions. I can get them back "cheap", as they were in supply. Only: I can not buy the divisions, as the build limit seems to be absolute: it isn't the number of units I field, but the number of units build that is limited.

This seems a bit odd: I can imagine a build limit so that you dont get a ahistorical force buildup, but not being able to replace destroyed divisions, while being able to build more expensive corps units (or specialist units like engineers) seems off.

It also makes things rather more difficult for the Germans - the build limit for tank groups is two -so after loosing two units, every next unit you loose will never be replaced, even if you have plenty of MPP.

It also makes the advice to build every unit of a type (like divisions) not correct: I have several divisions I can get back "cheap", but can not buy - instead I need to buy a corps at full price.

I wonder if this is as intended - I expected the build limit to apply to the number of units in the filed - that is, the destoyed units to be added to the build limit (or at least the cheap ones - they are supposed to have escaped destructions partly, and being rebuild for fled remenants).

Sounds like the soft build limits were not used. If I'm correct you can select this provided your opponent agrees. This allows you to build as many units as you want provided you are willing to pay a premium which increases incrementally for each unit above the limit you build.

Hi Bertram,

The way the hard build limit works is that it counts the number of units in the field and currently in production.

So if for example, Germany has a build limit of 10 tanks and currently fields 10 tanks then it cannot build anymore tanks.

However, if 3 tanks have been then they can later be rebuilt. In this case you would have 7 in the field with the option to build 3 more and once they have been purchased you are back to your full 10 tank limit and would not be able to purchase any more after that.

It looks like for the Barbarossa campaigns the German Tank build limit is set to 10 and you start the campaign with 10 Tanks in the field so no more Tank units would be available for purchase.

However if you play with 'Soft Build Limits' selected then wlape3 is correct and you should be able to purchase more Tank units in the campaign but at build penalty costs.

For the Divisions that you were not able to have rebuilt it is likely that something in the above can explain the situation as I can't say for sure what might be happening without seeing the turn in question. If you would like please send me a questionable turn at support@furysoftware.com.

Hope this helps,

Hubert

Hi Bertram :) ,

- As said Hubert most likely case is units in production queue (counting for your unit caps).

- 2 other possible things:

1) not enough MPPs (unlikely for divisions, can happen for high cost units like tanks if you add all upgrades when buying them)

2) pop/event units with hard builds (if you max out divisions pool then receive divisions by event you won't be able to buy back divisions, even at half price since you'll be over the cap)

It sure helps - it then works as I expected, and hoped - I just forgot to count the units in the production queue.
