I am seeing more frequent crashes recently

Recommended Posts

And not just because I have been playing the game more:)

With two crashes today I figured I should report it. The pattern, such as it is, is the crash happens during play back usually after watching the turn at least 3 probably more times. I will attempt to reposition the camera and the windows hour glass cursor appears. At this point I know I am done. I have patiently waited - crash. I have <ctrl><alt><del> - crash. I have <alt><tab> - crash. Every time I can restart the game and load the turn and all is well. Many turns I play during the day are totally fine just every now and then. All of this without rebooting during the day.

When I look at the C:\Users\Ian\AppData\Local\Temp\gs5\crashdumps directory I see 23 dump files going back to January 3rd. Here are links to the March crashes:

These are in chronological order so the last two are from today. I have a 4 GB Windows Vista machine and I pretty much always have FireFox running - so I can read these forums:-) and often MS Word - though not always.

My machine specs are thus:

Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 (64 bit)

HP model a6500f

AMD Phenom 9150e Quad-Core Processor 1.8GHz

4 Gb RAM

with and upgraded video card: Radeon HD 6770 with 1Gb memory

So this issue ONLY happens when you attempt to view a PBEM playback turn more than 3 times ? If you play it 3 or less times you will NOT get the crash ?

What Catalyst video driver do you have installed ? I don't know if one is better than the other, but if this is a possible issue we'll need to know.

Try playing back the PBEM playback 3 or more times with everything else closed down (Firefox, Word, DDFShow, etc.).

If you get crash logs in this situation, go ahead and post those too and we'll forward this to the developers.

Oops I did not express myself clearly enough. This is not a consistently reproducible crash. It only happens once and a while. I *never* watch the play back fewer than 3 times. Usually lots more than that. I just noticed that the last two times the crash has happened it was after the 3rd play back when I went to reposition the camera (for another play through). Also, I only play PBEM so I only have data for PBEM turns. This has happened with small scenarios (Le Desert) and large ones (Monty's Butchers) as well as QB's in between.

To be clear most times I play the game I watch the play back many many times and issue my orders with no issues at all. The vast majority of the times in fact. I always shut the game down after I play each turn.

Sure I can do that - again this is not regularly reproducible so I am not sure what will happen. I wanted to report this to you guys in case the crash log pointed to something obvious. Since I don't have the source code I cannot tell what the crash logs are saying. Sometimes the crash logs tell you everything you need to know - usually they don't - but sometimes.

I updated my drivers - after being install hell for 4 1/2 hours. Man, I hate updating drivers. After one AMD installer error, an Microsoft installer error and a mistake by yours truly I am finally back up and running.

Both CMBN and CMFI run fine. FRAPS is reporting a double the previous frame rate in CMFI but no change in CMBN. I find that a bit surprising but hey I'll take faster.

OK that mostly helped. I have played numerous turns and seen the pauses occasionally but now instead of crashing it eventually comes back and works. I can finish any game I start. So far so good. The only glitch is that now when I leave a game running overnight (I often load a turn and then head for bed leaving the machine and game running) so far each morning the game has crashed - but no dmp files.

I guess I will stop doing that now.
