Split - Unsplit

I play these games because I don't have the reflexes of a caffeinated teenager and do very bad at FPS and RTS games.

Opening minute of the battle I hit <space bar> select Admin -> Scout Team. I very slowly 30 seconds or so position my cursor where I want the scouts to go and the squad leader issues a "Unspilt" command. Now I have 10 guys selected.

Way too fast on the "regroup" command. What are the time and distance parameters for this??

They vary, IME. I have no idea what makes it longer or shorter. A possible way round, since you're playing FI would be to issue a short movement waypoint in the general direction you're going to move the split element. That'll stop them regrouping while you place the terminal waypoint. If you're in RT, it'll give them something to be getting on with, too.

Personally, I split all my teams up in the setup phase. They still recombine if I'm slow, but the actual moving away of the split element can be more haphazard without any detriment (except having to move them back to where you actually want to deploy them).

I usually select the recon team or AT team I wanted and immediately get them walking away from the crowd. As they're walking to the waypoint I can ponder the battlefield with my chin in my hand. :)

I did know where they were going - out on point.

Seriously, it was no more than 30 seconds when the re-group occured. I split and had the scout team selected and only the scout team selected (no clicking around or anything). I was trying to find the right building I wanted them to go to, in a very built up urban setting and - whamo REGROUP - before I could click a way point.

I never had this rapid re-group happen in CMBN and I've played very few CMFIs battles(<5 games). Not a real bug just a little flustrating having to split 3 times before I got it to work.

I guess I'm asking for something like a spilt order stays spilt until the red button is hit. Then a regroup can occur of squad teams that are in close proximity.

But what if i change my mind about how i split my teams during the setup phase?

You should try to split the squad into the teams you want and then immideatly give them a random waypoint just in order to avoid regrouping. You can then move that randomly issued waypoint to the location you actually want it to be. I do it that way too, although i am usually caffeinated and its not been so long since i had been a teenager.

I'm still waiting for a patch to keep the first unit selected after the split. For instance, if I split a full American squad into A/B/C, I wish the resulting A sub-unit would stay selected instead of having to click on an icon again. Running it the other way by selecting the C or Scout sub-unit would be fine by me too.

That's exactly how it works right now, in my BN v1.11 and FI 1.01, and as far as I recall in every other version of CMx2. I just checked. Has it changed in BN v2.0?

If you "split teams", the A team remains selected (note that they won't recombine by default, because the two or three teams are already on separate action spots unless you've been fiddling, and have already plonked the entire squad in one AS to make previously separated elements recombine). If you ask for an Assault, Sout or AT team to split off, that's what is selected when the command executes (and because the specialised team takes individuals from one of the "official" teams as designated in the TO, they'll recombine if left where they are for too long).

Yeah, and I just tested it again, too. W...T...F...I could have sworn it was not working, but that was in a battalion-sized brawl...hmmm...perhaps it is time for a CAT scan?
