John Kettler
Last night, I learned a neat real life German mortar control trick. The Germans would habitually have the FO for the mortars deploy 200m ahead of the mortars and with the advance element. The FO had a soldier with him specifically to keep the wire straight and not stuck someplace. When the call for fire went in, the FO would estimate range to the target, add 200m, then phone that total distance back to the mortars. The Germans learned this technique from the Finns. The vid explains this starting at about 13:45. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKaB5QkViL0 Regards, John Kettler
poesel
The technical term for this second guy is 'Kabelbongo'. (my sources are post-war - but from the sound of it it may well have been used then)
