JonS
Hmmm, maybe. But I wonder how indispensable drivers were considered in the German army. They wouldn't have been as common among the general population as in the US, for instance. The Germans seem to have generally been pretty cavalier when it came to looking after rare and specialised human resources. Examples are legion, including * shutting down flight training schools so that the instructors could be killed in a futile attempt to keep Stalingrad supplied * shutting down armoured training schools so the instructors and cadres could be used to create another armoured division, then just using that division as a regular division * using field training ersatz battalions as regular line battalions. (and sending a bunch of guys like Einstein out of the country before the war wasn't terribly smart either) The German WWII armed forces were the original Future Eaters. I doubt they took much more care with their drivers, even though they did go to quite remarkable lengths to try and increase the number of qualified motor vehicle drivers in what was basically a horse-drawn country.
JonS
"HQ Support" and "XO teams" could be eliminated to provide the MG personnel. I'd say that should be your last resort. Generally the military trys to keep squads together, and not just through any old bod an MG and tell them to go find 2nd Platoon. Besides, those "HQ Support" and "XO teams" have real jobs that need to be carried out (in the real world, not necessarily in CM), with or without the halftracks about. If the tracks are absent, though, the crew of those vehicles should definately be counted in the strength of the squad they carried. I don't remember what the exact numbers breakdown is, but assume a US amrd inf squad has 10 men, and is carried in a halftrack with a crew of 2. Delete the carrier, and the squad strength is down by 2. Add an MMG section of three men and the squad is overstrength by 1 man, so headcount reduce the squad to 90%, and the squad+MMG has 12 men, which is perfect.
