Lazy historical question to kill time while at work

Recommended Posts

I had to check the top of the threat to make sure I was still in the Normandy section and not the CMSF section. :) It seems that small arms doctrine goes in and out of fashion. The pendulum swings from volume fire to discrete accurate fire, from light weight weapons to robust heavy barrel weapons, from small bullets to big wall-penetrating bullets. Depending on where the pendulum is at the MG42 and BAR swing into favor or out. There are those who think a heavy tripod weapon with a screaming ROF is over-designed. I once compared the MG42 max ROF to it recommended frequency of barrel change per rounds fired. It came down to a few tens of seconds firing before needing to swap barrels. Say what you will about the old-fashioned M1917 with its relatively low ROF, water jacket and cloth belt ammo. It could 'do the job' all day long.
