CM:BN Screenshot Thread #2

Wow, that's a lot of blood from the guy in the bunker!

LOL.  Yes it looks that way and that was what I thought also.  The destroyed bunker is actually selected in the screenshot and the "blood" is the modified red X marking the bunker as destroyed.  The mod is Veins Base Markers that is available in the Repository.  Looks like a blood spot for troops.  For knocked out vehicles I just imagine it is the red transmission fluid that leaked out.   :D

Hans is tired and angry…so very angry.  They are retreating now, forced back by the Ami.  Rumor is they are about to be cut off by the enemy, so they are rushing.  There is one last roadway to travel, and the Americans are cutting them up all the way back to safety.  They are like jackals, snapping at the legs of a wounded lion.

Hans is lugging the MG-42 he picked up from his dead friend’s hands earlier in the day.  He hates it because it reminds him that his friend from Koblenz is dead.  And, he hates it because the Ami immediately shoot at the sound of his machine gun, greatly lowering his chances for survival.

They are struggling down this one final road.  He remembers the fight earlier in the day when they came through here on the attack.  It was dark then, and the Americans fought viciously.  Now the light is fading as the sun goes down, and they are limping back, wounded and bloodied, and still fighting, but now fighting to escape.  Everyone is demoralized.

As they approach the church where an old WWI cemetery is located, fire rings out from the gravestones.  Ambush!  An American PAK, hidden among the crosses.  His friends Dieter and Klaus are writhing in the dust, shrapnel wounds emptying blood into the French soil.  He is no longer tired – he is just angry.

Men rush forward with quiet deliberation, some to attack and some to check the wounded.  The Ami PAK is taken under direct fire as the Feldwebel hurls grenades over the wall of the cemetery.  There are terrible screams…then silence.  Hans eases forwards cautiously to see if there are survivors.  Quiet bodies are spilled all around the enemy gun.  One seems to be wrapping his arms around a cross, as if he is hoping the dead won’t claim him.

Way to the back wall, away from the Ami PAK, Hans sees a solitary figure.  A survivor.  The soldier is running away from his fallen comrades, seeking a way out.  The hunters are now the hunted.  The fortunes of war can change so quickly, in an instant.

Hans sees the soldier running frantically along the back wall.  Trapped.  Nowhere to run to.  Hans wonders what idiot set this ambush – probably an officer.  Anyone can see that after the ambush was sprung, the ambushers would have no avenue of escape.  Wahnsinn.  Insanity.

The Feldwebel orders the men forward.  Clear the cemetery.  Their shadows enter the graveyard first, tentatively, not wanting to disturb the crosses.  Hans can almost sense the spirits of the old soldiers.  The dead are watching.

Hans can’t see the solder now, but he knows the most dangerous enemy is the one that is cornered.  The soldier has lost his mates; they lie quiet around the wreckage of the Ami PAK.  He has nothing left to lose but his self-respect, his dignity, and his life.

Shots ring out.  The soldier is defiant.  He is hopelessly outnumbered.  He cannot hope to escape the trap the cemetery has become for him.  Hans wonders why the soldier doesn’t just throw down his gun and surrender.  As he hits the dirt and aims his machine gun, he wonders if he would surrender if he was the one trapped in the cage.

The Feldwebel orders the men forward.  Vorsicht!  Caution.  They ease forward, their shadows leading the way.  Hans can feel the spirits of the dead soldiers.  Are they disapproving of his actions?  Angry that more soldiers had to die in yet another war?  The temperature seems to have dropped once they enter and walk among the crosses.  It must be the trees sheltering the graves, Hans tells himself.  His sweat feels cold against his body.

There is an eerie stillness now, almost palpable.  The body of the soldier lies towards the back of the cemetery.  He is not moving, just as still as the air that hangs around the crosses.  Hans moves forward gently, silently, senses straining to hear and eyes straining to see any other threats.  He is unaware that he is unconsciously stepping around the graves so as not to disturb the interred soldiers.
