    1. Of course, it will depend on how much Battlefront wants to work on it.
    2. If the CM2 code is halfway decent, it should mostly be a relatively simple re-compile and build.
    3. Apple is supplying lots of developer tools to help with the recompile.
    4. As others said, there will be an X86 (i.e. Intel) emulator to run older intel based apps.
    5. You don't plan to upgrade your Mac anytime soon, anyway 8-)

Thanks for your reply.  Respnses below. Also, I have a helpdesk ticket open now.

What version of CMBN are you running ? Is this a purchased version or the Demo ? Is the same user logged in that installed CMBN ?

4.02, purchased, worked fine last time I tried it which was about December.  Same user, who also has Admin privileges.

Is the 'getTempDirectory' the last command you see in the Console before CMBN fails ? How does CMBN fail, does the icon simply bounce in the Dock and then disappear (or remain bouncing) ? Or does it issue some sort of error message ? The temp directory's name and contents can vary, but there is usually a 'T' subdirectory at the end of that path, which may not get populated with files until the rest of CMBN actually loads (a bit later in the loading process).

Last thing in console.  The CM icon flutters for two or three seconds and then goes away. No message.

You shouldn't need to make ANY SORT OF CHANGE to the /var/folders directories. Clear them out by rebooting (not 'Sleep', but actually restarting or shutting down and then booting up) your Mac. You should NOT need to make any changes to permissions on folders in here or 'hand create' folders in here.

I have rebooted several times.  Also, thanks to the helpdesk I have tried Moving CM.app to desktop, and then copy/paste back to CM folder.  Still same symptoms.

You can run the 'Disk Utility' in the Applications/Utilities folder. This can repair some system permission issues (if there are any here in this situation), though I don't suspect that may be the issue here.

Me either, but I can try.  So far as I remember, there have been no OSX upgrades in the last couple of months, but maybe...

In the System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General tab > 'Allow apps downloaded from:' is set to 'Anywhere', correct ?

It was set to the middle option, allow from Apple and Authorized Devs.  I changed it to Anywhere, same problem.

  2. Hi, guys.  As title says, CMBN won't start.  I sent a message to support, so this message is just overkill, but as you all know, sometimes the Netmind is the way to go.

    A few details

It worked before, about two months ago.

Fresh reboot, OSX 10.11.6.  CMBN starts and fails in a few seconds.  Messages on console are

    4/25/20 12:12:20.583 PM CMBN[761]: initAppMonitor >>
    4/25/20 12:12:20.585 PM CMBN[761]: getHomeDirectory ==> [/Users/lee]
    4/25/20 12:12:20.585 PM CMBN[761]: getTempDirectory ==> [/var/folders/c7/gky87rrx01s29kb33df6q3500000gr/T/]

The T/j directory didn't exist.  I created it rwx to me. Same failure messages.

Save me, Obiwan Battlefront, you're my only hope.

  3. Could you try firing up Activity Monitor.  Then, when you experience a freeze, quickly switch to AM and see if something is eating your processing power.

Also, some years back, I had occasional freeze/crash/panic issues.  I finally googled how to run a hardware test, and discovered I had a bad memory chip.  Replaced some memory, problem solved.

  4. Oh, yeah.

What I would hope for is that various people would create various plugin "mods" and some would be more popular and survive and grow, while others would just fade away.  I suppose it is possible that they could fragment the CM user space, but I doubt it.  The Cities: Skylines simulation game is a good model, where there are lots and lots of great plugins.

  5. This is an idea for some future CM, and I realize it will probably never happen.

Browsers and many apps such as GIMP and Blender allow plugins, by which I mean a way to control or interact with the internals of an app using user supplied code in languages such as python, java, scheme, etc.

    So, I imagine...

Tactical AI:  Along with its usual work, it checks for some plugin override that modifies its behavior.  Squad advance in a line, for example.  Multi-squad bounding attack.  Different behaviors for different nations.  Implement some of those C2 rules in code instead of spreadsheets.

Scenario AI:  I haven't looked at this at all, so it is hard to say,  but maybe experienced  players could come up with better rules for managing the computer player on the large scale.

That's my random vagary for the day.  Back to facebook 8-)

  6. Did everyone jump with the official load?  It is easy to imagine gung ho troopers with extra everything.

I read somewhere once about extra leg bags that were used in Normandy.  As I recall, the idea was to use 6 feet of rope to attach a bag containing 50 or 100 pounds or so of extra equipment to one of each jumpers leg, and push it out the door just before the guy jumped.

The article was very critical for several reasons.

First, this idea was used in the actual combat jump without being much tested, and no training jumps were done.

More importantly, under fire, most planes did not slow down to the ideal speed before the drops, due apparently to pilot reaction to anti-aircraft fire.  Pushing a heavy bag out the door at high speed turned out to be much more violent compared to the ideal drop speed.  many if not most extra bags were ripped off the jumper's leg as it left the door, often causing a broken leg or similar injury.

just wondering if it is possible if BF  admins can create another announcement/sticky thread where work like this can be put into.  It would be a shame to see it drop out of sight as more posts are put up and I think they would be missing out on a great opportunity of advertisement for the game.  I know there may well be legality issues but it is a thought.  Same can be said for some of the truly outstanding AAR's that are done here, I know there is a search function but it's not that great and to have all the real quality work in one place for each game would be a win win for everyone.

(just a random thought that popped into my head while I'm waiting for the clock to hit 5 at work).

Well, I just spent the afternoon reading it, so it's not dead yet.

  8. Engine could keep track of the camera angles for each unit, so that when you come back to that unit it automagically gives you the last view you were looking at.

Similar idea is that the starting camera values depend on the type of unit.  For a Co command unit, you get maybe a level 4 taking in as much of the Co as possible.  For a Platoon command, a level 3 oriented to show the platoon.  Etc.

Oh, oh.  There could be a config file for this, so users can make their own defaults, and a tiny language for specifying complicated stuff.

  9. Isn't a big difference between Hunt and Move what happens if they contact the enemy?

Hunt:  go to ground and cancel rest of movement order.

Move: Return fire, maybe go to ground or not, depending, and try to continue movement.

In a "perfect" world, any movement would have two settings, one for how fast, and another for what to do if opposed.

Remember that Commonwealth Squad Movement video?  Those scouts "hunted" very slowly, alternating from crouched walking and crawling and long spotting sessions

  10. Something I noticed from several memoirs I read about Huertgen and Ardennes engagements.

When going into frontline combat, troops left their greatcoats with their personal gear, even when very cold.  I guess the idea being that they are cumbersome.  You might be really cold, but experience would show that you can recover from that, but not from getting the tail of your coat stuck on a fence post or something.

The reason I mention this is that in scenarios we often see troops on both all sides wearing greatcoats.  Somebody went to a lot of trouble to make those models.  A shame if they just discarded them. 8-)
