hey chuckdyke, thanks for the answer. in my naive imagination i assumed that gunner or loader would man the mg (one 7.62mm mg still working / green)...but with your explanation it makes sense. thanks a lot!

Sorry if I’m captain obvious but the newer games are not located the same as the older Battlefront games.

You're welcome, there are things in real life which you can't do in CM. One of them is swapping responsibilities. You can't even bail out a green crew and let an experienced crew who immobilized their tank mount their tank. This was one of my frustrations.

Is this in good faith? Red means out of action. My guess is you lost 2 crew members one manned the bow machine gun reason it doesn't work. . All of the fighting compartment is out of action. Two things you can do bail out or reverse somewhere safe. I would bail out and in real life destroy the tank. Loader gunner they lost the main gun and the co axial. The driver won't operate the bow machine gun.

I would say that this post has been the biggest POS I've ever seen. Did you actually play the "FREE" demo first before spending $60?

You really simply have to play the game a lot and you will start to understand how the AI reacts in certain situations, and how to get what you want from your units, how far you can push em b4 they break etc.  After playing CM2 for 13+ years now, I find that am playing vs the system as much as using RL tactics - sometimes they work, and sometimes... you have to do things differently.  It is a game after all.

Army Training Publication (ATP) 3-21.8: Infantry Platoon and Squad You don't have to go further than your browser. Sorry you can adapt them to WW2 the big difference is the Command-and-Control structure.

ig deals with keys for platforms like EA Origin, Steam, Ubisoft, NCSoft and this for many years. i would like to claim that this would not be the case anymore if these keys would be put in market illegally. i myself (region germany) was a "heavy user" at ig for a while and had only the best experiences. since i got stuck on cm i fortunately don't have to look for new games that often anymore.

Hi beep and welcome.  The protection thing isn't an issue in my experience.
If you're looking at buying Battle for Normandy, I would say go for it.  And then you'll get Red Thunder, Final Blitzkrieg and Fortress Italy - but not necessarily in that order 😉.

During a rollercoaster year, one thing that has kept me happily distracted and occupied has been CM:BN and Paper Tiger's incredible Scottish Corridor campaign. Has been great fun commanding (and often cursing at!) the slow and lumbering Churchills seen below..

When I was in the US Army in the early 2000s, all of the trucks and Humvees were fully automatic. Any that were still manual transmission at that point were probably just in National Guard units.
EDIT: nevermind, it turns out M809s were still in service in Afghanistan. 😮

Basically, if you don't get an Icon you don't have an LOS. . Your commander needs to open his turret within thirty-two meters of a Unit which has the contact Icon inside a minute you see he will get a contact Icon and do an area fire mission if you want. Waypoints give you an idea and that is all. Here I had my best spotters in the business, but the Scimitar spotted a movement when he did his mission. Now I can call out artillery make my Snipers do some spotting etc. Your Sherman has a different C2 than your infantry he needs to do a 'Horizontal transfer of Intel. Units in the Same C2 share through a Vertical transfer this can be done by radio.

I wrote a campaign review thread at SimHQ. It died off since there was no interest or comments. But I covered several CMBN campaigns. Maybe you can take something from it, though I did not consider engine 4 in the commentary.

I can definitively say that for Sherman tanks you can only remount the original crew.

The problem with any game, is that you do not have the luxury of being on the ground and checking it with your own eyes.
The only way to ensure a unit will position itself correctly, whether that be hulldown, or in full defilade (or whatever) is to use the LOS tool from a waypoint.  It is a tool, nothing more, and it is also just an approximation.  Actual visibility from that spot may or may not be what you expect due to the different height of units and other factors.. like the tactical AI placement of individual soldiers in a squad along a hedgerow, etc.
It's a tool, nothing more and is no more gamey than any other tool that is meant to aid the player and help them cope with the artificial world that CM inhabits.

Came to CM in 2018 with CMBN, so many exciting hours in front of the screen. Even away from the screen i often think about the respective tactical problems. I'm from germany, here there are three or four good combat mission-youtubers, a small wargaming community. Very instructive, as is Bil Hardenberger's blog. You won't regret the investment if you've already had fun with the demos. Yesterday i bought cmfb. finally. playing time since then: 9 hours. Gotta go then too, cmfb is waiting. Have fun.

Personally, I compared the cost of the investment not against other video games but against tabletop miniatures gaming, since Combat Mission is much more analogous that that experience than most video games.
The $110 of the CMBN Big Bundle would get you a decent sized starter force for a single faction in a wargame like Bolt Action or Flames of War. Of course you'd need to buy terrain and paint and rulebooks and dice and tape measures and whatnot (meaning you'd likely spend more), and then of course you've got to actually put the stuff together and (ideally) paint it if you want to play a game. Which, after setting aside dozens of hours for the hobbying, requires you to either go to a game store or meet up with friends (let's just set aside the whole Covid thing for a moment, because eventually that will be over).
So, in contrast to that, the $110 for the CMBN bundle gets you a lot more. You get dozens of units across the Allied and Axis factions, encompassing regular infantry, airborne infantry, mechanized infantry, armor, artillery, and more. You get historical TO&Es for the date of the scenario you're playing. And you get some of the best rules I've ever experienced in a tactical-level wargame, which feel by all accounts to be very realistic. You get literally 700+ different "tables" to play on, many of which are sizes that would be impossible to play on if they were real life game board, unless you were happy to tromp all over your terrain. And access to a community of players around the world with whom you can play via email, meaning you don't have to go to the game store at all. And of course, the singleplayer content is plenty challenging for new players, and as others have said will likely keep you busy for a long time.
Anyways, we all have to make our own choices in these matters, but thinking of CMBN more as a tabletop miniatures game than a videogame is what helped me make up my mind. Sadly, now I fear that Combat Mission has made my miniatures collection rather obsolete!

sPA505 reacted to StieliAlpha in Wittmann's Demise Scenario
Finally, I finished my PBEM game of Wittmans Demise. I played the Germans and scored a tactical victory, killed 43 tanks but lost 29. Wittmann survived (with Dollinger and von Westernhagen).
Extremely exciting scenario. I was about to give up a couple of times. Each time when I thought „I‘ve done it! That‘s it now!“ some more Shermans popped up.
I don‘t want to spoil the scenario for others, so just my two highlights:
    - Von Westerhagen single handedly saved the left flank and cleared the farm west of Gaumnesil (La Maisonette, I believe) with his Tiger from 3 Shermans in (almost) hand to hand combat. 🤓
    - After missing twice, Wittmann scored the last kill precisely in the last second of the regular playing time.🍾
