  1. Thanks to J.J. Abrams and Alex Kurtzman, new Star Trek is trying to be Star Wars. Not a fan of Disney's Star Wars, but I'd still take Mandalorian over Star Trek: Discovery or Star Trek: Picard. Don't get me started on Star Trek: Lower Decks. I'd recommend Westworld, Expanse (up until Season 4) and Counterpart to anyone interested in new-er sci-fi shows.
  2. Phase 1: Recce Recce platoons sneak their way into the brush. We need to see what we're dealing with. Forward observers establish satisfactory observation posts. They are ready to direct remaining artillery assets, for Phase 2. Oi! PAK opened up on us! Reverse -- oh, and do let Major Chetty's Shermans know where they are. Firing at that tree-line! First shot falls short! PAK returns fire! That was a close one -- hope we've brought spare underpants. They've quieted down after a few shots... but keep firing! Major Chetty doesn't want to see that PAK, ever again. The Huns know we're here. MG bullets ricochets off of armour, as our own MGs arrive into the thick of it. HMG spotted. The gloves are coming off. Time to establish fire superiority.
  3. PRELUDE: A Retrospective This was our Battalion's first battle against the Hun, in Italy. It has been a rude awakening, and lessons were learned the hard way. After a heavy bombardment, Jerry pulled back from his defensive line. Little did we know about their well-prepared fallback positions. Their guns are well positioned, camouflaged and fortified. They make mincemeat out of infantry, and seriously crippled a couple of Shermans. We tried to advance quickly, to avoid being bled dry in kill-zones. The Hun made great use of automatic weapons and hand-held anti-tank launchers. We decided to take it slow, to conserve our forces. If this deadly maze is a sign of things to come -- we will need them for taking Celleno. First, we take our time probing their positions. Second, we slowly surround them. Third, we pound them into submission. Fourth, Jerry counter-attacks with tanks. This caught us off-guard -- we can expect armoured counter-attacks, going forward.
  4. At the end of the day, I'd rather be in a Sherman, on the fields of Europe. They were made in better staffed, equipped, and stocked factories, which were safe from occupation and bombing. US and Canada had the luxury of time for quality control in both design and production. US and Canada had ocean travel to consider. When shipping costs are paid in blood, tanks couldn't constantly be replaced. That's why the M3 and Ram were produced, before the M4. Knowing that a large batch of early production vehicles guaranteed trouble. What if I'm in Stalingrad, though? I don't have aircraft engines, radios or the luxury of time. I don't have tankers -- only tractor drivers. I face better led, trained and equipped infantry and pioneers, in a tight urban setting. I don't need a Sherman, I need a T-34 -- a couple of mortars and a howitzer!
  5. Tightening the Noose An SAA counterattack catches a couple of Light Infantry platoons off-guard. The assault turns into a stalemate. The SAA harasses garrisoned infantry with RPGs. The SAA infantry charges into the kill-zone. Another desperate move, Al Hasakah is near. Al Hasakah The Outskirts are lightly defended. Downtown is surrounded, but is still a fortress. Two Cold Warriors face off in the dusty rubble of Syria. The firepower of the task force persuades the SAA staff into unconditional surrender. Mission. Accomplished.
  6. Suburban Hell Driver! REVERSE! The Eryx teams are quick to deploy and establish kill zones. Just in time for an armoured SAA thrust. We're dry! And they just keep coming! The cavalry is here -- and not too soon! The SAA expend their T-62s in a foolish adventure. Now, the town's capture is only a matter of time.
  7. Celleno: The Final Battle The Mission Before us, lies the hill-top fortress of Celleno. This is the final objective of our campaign, and it looks to be the toughest one, yet. We did our best to conserve our fuel, ammo and manpower for this battle. We are ahead of the recce, and nearly blind. Now, night approaches and we must begin the assault. The Plan Phase 1: Establish observation points and direct the initial bombardment. Phase 2: Occupy the heights and establish a base of fire. Phase 3: Begin the combined assault on ALPHA. Phase 4: Mop up BRAVO and CHARLIE. The Forces Task Force 1 (Armoured): C Squadron (Major Chetty) Task Force 2 (Infantry): B Company (Major Jansen) Task Force 3 (Infantry): C Company (Major Ntsimango) Supports: 2 x Recce Troops, 2 x Forward Observers, 2 x Machinegun Sections
  8. Big Front 242 fan here. Gonna get the obvious one, out of the way:
  9. Wishing for a Cold War prequel to Khabour Trail, following PPCLI and friends in Europe. The Cold War was over before my friends and I were born. In a strange way, there is a second-hand nostalgia towards the time period. It could be our parents and grandparents telling stories about duck 'n' cover drills. It could also be that Cold War-era media (music, movies, shows, games, books, etc.) are culturally significant. I agree about the geopolitical world seeming to want an encore.

  11. Wait, is that a Starship? OOooh! Fulda gap! Fulda gap!
  12. Roleplay in CM can be both fun and efficient. So, step into your officers' shoes. If memory serves, here's my rundown of the mission: a. You've taken a village. Now, the Hun is trying to take it back. As a rule, the defender holds a qualitative advantage. The counter-attack will be most effective, when the enemy is beaten and bloodied. So, let's focus on the defense first. b. Set up your forces in ambush. Think as your opponent: where would you attack if you were him? Where would you call in artillery? Try to set your forces in a safe place, that offers overlapping Line of Sight on suspected enemy advance routes. Try to space out forces that may get stonked, and run back to fall back positions when spotting rounds start falling. c. Put your observers, heavy support and tanks on the wooded hilly terrain (behind the village). Keep an eye on the hill in front of the village, the Hun may have STuG (s) there. The Hun usually concentrates his forces in a so-called Schwerpunkt. If they manage to achieve a local breakthrough, use mobile units from quiet sectors to bolster the defender's efforts. d. Let the wave break against your shore. Once the Hun's assault stalls, it is time to strike! Have your observers call the rest of your artillery any buildings or wooded cover in the enemy's rear. Move up your rear line, as the front line keeps watch. This is called "leap frogging". Use HUNT to cautiously advance to the hill, to the front. e. Divide and conquer. Every time you encounter an enemy unit, stop and shoot everything you have at it, until it is dead. A thoroughly broken enemy will surrender, and hand you an automatic victory. At the end of the day, you want as many of your troops to see tomorrow. So, don't bite off more than you can chew.
  13. - Marines for US, RF, UKR. Airborne for RF, UKR. - T-72s for UKR, T-80 for RF. BMP-1s for both. - UAVs (Skat, Predator, Global Hawk), infantry quad-copters and UGVs. - Poland and Belarus. - Loyalist and Seperatist UNCONs.
  14. A towel is just about the most massively useful thing a tank hitchhiker can carry.
  15. 1. Campaigns (Reichstag one sounds like a blast) 2. Quick Battles (Newer QBs have better AI) 3. Sturmtiger ( )
  16. Road Kill The Mechanized Infantry races down towards Tall Tamir, as dawn breaks. The Infantry and LAVs are slightly delayed by Fedayeen stragglers. The SAA makes a hasty retreat to Tall Tamir. The Battlegroup follows in pursuit. Forward Operators report an SAA SPAAG destroyed by Artillery. Infantry platoons leap-frog through the streets and the craters of a rolling barrage. The SAA forward defenders scatter and surrender. Next Stop: Tall Tamir.
  17. A giant Reichstag battle, split into two missions, and for both sides. Can't wait, hoping for a flaktower of some sort. Here's the deets:
  18. Season 1 Finale was great! Makes me want to try my hand at a CM Machinima. I was hoping Lt. Poon would give a dressing down to whoever tossed the 'nade at the POWs. The only good Hun is a dead Hun, I suppose. I prefer to use HUNT instead of ASSAULT when approaching prepared opposition. I have had too many half-squads cut down, giving the other half-squad cold feet. I find ASSAULT useful for advancing through closely watched open areas, and clearing buildings. For a poorly preforming PC, hiding the trees can improve frame rates. Now, I am slowly unlearning this bad habit. Turns out that ignoring the dimensions of your concealment can be hazardous to your health.
  19. Welcome to the forums, bud. They are releasing Black Sea on Steam, this Thursday. I'm guessing it's all hands on deck, this week. So, it may be a bit quiet until next week, possibly February.
  20. Epic cutscenes, dude! Will be keeping an eye out for more adventures.
  21. So, Black Sea Steam release is January 21st. Are we going to see F&R pre-orders before then?
