  1. It's been a while, but gettting back into the game has been fun as always. We need more scenarios and a North African Afrika Korps version of the game is defintely way too long in the making.

RDM - Colossal Crack - CW

This original scenario has been randomized and expanded so that no two games will play alike, and so you and the AI opponent have more forces at your disposal making for a more intense experience. There are 5 different AI plans and all reinforcements have been set for random deployment times.

As this is an alteration of an existing scenario you can expect to play the same objectives and general flow of the battle but with more opposition and some surprises. The reinforcements have been designed to keep you on your toes and to counter those of your AI opponent. However don't get complacent or throw away your forces - you will need them.

You will need the CW pack for CMBN to play this scenario.

This is one of my favourite scenarios/maps from the CMBN game and it has Panthers, so I just had to do some tinkering with it.

Feedback welcome and appreciated. you can email me at xxnightopsxx@gmail.com

Thanks to the scenario author for the original scenario and Battlefront for one of the best and most unique war game simulations around. Keep up the good work.

  2. So, I have a new computer and had to install CMBN (and all other titles from scratch) I downloaded the full installer plus the new patches. The process was tricky for even experienced users but after wading through the laborious installation, applying patches and activation - as well as getting the games to work on a 4k screen things were working okay and a lot faster with a more powerful processor (still no multicore support) and SSD drive. However the main issue is with CMBN, it plays but it misreports the unit names/types both in-game and in the editor. It has all these strange names for the units like it's drawing the info partially from CMRT, CMBS and elsewhere. In the editor, the oddities continue with misnamed units/hardware and instead of things like selecting AIR SUPPORT it has the option for AERIAL FLAMETHROWER (whatever that would be, is this Game of Thrones?). I tried a clean install, three times including downloading the full install files again, as well as trying a few other different things. The only thing that works is reverting to the 4.00 exe version where the editor and game work fine without the above-mentioned issues. Going to the 4.01 or 4.02 executable brings back the issues. Has anyone had these issues and can anyone shed some light on what might be a fix? The issue doesn't appear with any of the other games in the series but being that CMBN was the first released in this series and works and installs a bit differently from the others might that be a pointer to the problem? I don;t recall the issue on the older system but then hadn;t been upgraded to 4.02 on that.

The only noticeable issue with the other games has been slightly more frequent freezing/crashing of the game than on my older system and the sound stuttering every so often (I usually play turn-based so this is during the action playback mostly) as well as the graphics momentarily locking (at the same time as the sound stuttering).

    Any thoughts/help much appreciated.

  3. Hey PanzerMike, I have but who has the time with playing the game and real life etc. I've always liked randomness and surprise being introduced in games so I've found a niche where I enjoy modifying these scenarios and making them more replayable and non-linear. I also enjoy the what-if element. That takes up a lot of time in and of itself (way, way too much time to be honest :)) and is so much fun that designing a fully randomized scenario from scratch gets pushed further back with each new scenario I find and like. I still have 3-4 here that I haven't fully completed in terms of testing/finishing. Also modifying the scenarios is how I have mainly learned to use the editor and I still have a lot to learn.

Non of this is to take anything away from the original designers that put in all the time and effort to put these sceanrios together, to begin with. The two scenarios are very different and hopefully, people that find my modified versions will discover and go back and play the originals.

PS I haven't been on here for a while because lately I've been caught up playing Fallout 4, normally I only like multiplayer shooters (outside of strategy games) instead of single player games but this game has drawn me in with its open world non-linear play style.

PSS great scenario PanzerMike, keep em coming.

  6. It is a bit like that, challenged me on the first tries too. I always try to add enough hardware/forces to make it winnable but not easily winnable.

Thanks for the AAR, great to read other's experiences with the scenarios. Sorry I didn't come back earlier but have been caught up with RL. I have posted another CMFI scenario today though - this one is a real pounding...

@Ithikial_AU Some sort of monthly to quartely devblog or official Q/A session would be great, especially since Combat Mission is a franchise that relies heavily on its tightly-knit community. As it stands right now, we are paupers standing under the window of a rich merchant, hoping that today he will toss out a few coins like he sometimes does.

ID software used to do that in the old days and built a very strong community where the developers were continuously communicating their plans with the base.

Also, posting in these forums is free. BFC should impose a 20 USD levy on every post. Just stuffing some actual meaning into that "here's my two cents" phrase. Retroactively, of course.

    Ka-ching!

Next thing we know we have CMX2 running on Vulkan, better than CmdOps assistant AI that always get right our intent, TrackIR support so we don't have to push those mouses around anymore, a set of tools to import GIS data from the USGS site so we can get high fidelity 4x4 kms maps that would make @Erwin cry with joy with a snap of our fingers... And why not, briefing voice overs via text to speech tech that just sounds like Sean Bean...

    What about multi-monitor support?

Yeah, I feel the same way... I try and come back to CMx2 but it is just so visual/aurally/performance/UIX wise clunky... It's just is so jarring. I've stated this before, nothing new and I know, I know nothing will ever be done to improve the visuals/sounds/uix or performance...it is what it is. Kind of an end of line of major development. I'd love to be wrong but it doesn't seem that way.

Sure we might get a few more "modules" but a "modernization" of the engine from everything I've read and been told just is not gonna happen. The best "we" can hope for is a game with the "guts" of CM but the outside/performance of a modern game. The only way I see that happening is with a new engine... probably from some other developer, maybe some day. Niche games are more popular than ever these days...and with Steam (which I know BF has no interest in), who knows, maybe we'll get lucky. CM has been fun (sound and texture limited modding too) while it lasted all those years for me, especially when the experience didn't feel so far behind.

Or we'll end up with what happened to Harpoon. New development effort after development stalls and what you end up with is a very old engine being bought and tweaked endlessly by third parties. Let's hope it doesn't go that way.

Personally, I hope Dice buy it and merge it with Battlefield - the best of all worlds. ;)

  11. Thanks for the AAR. I'd recommend careful placement of your assets (especially the anti-tank guns and Marders) to ambush and slow/halt the advance. Secondly, don't send in your reinforcements piecemeal and plan your counterattack carefully otherwise they will get slaughtered by the massed British armor. That was the only way I was able to win on Elite. Retry it with that in mind but be prepared for a different assault approach by the AI.

I deliberately avoided adding heavier armor like Tigers purely because I wanted this to remain an old school slugging match rather than a turkey shoot.

  12. I'm not sure what has happened to the resources/scenarios/campaigns uploaded to my shared google drive since I've been away for a while but I notice most have disappeared or most likely deleted. I've now locked the drive so only viewing downloading is possible and will get Erwin to reupload the archives. If you have any resources to share PM me so I can add you to the uploaders list.

Anyone who can shed light on what happened to the original files, I'd appreciate it if you can let us know.

    Enema at The Gates?  :o

It's a godawful film.....Total and utter pants, even the CGI is over the top and poorly done IMHO.

For a start Vasily Zaitsev actually looked like this:

Need I really go on?

"Enema" at the Gates would be a very different movie, which I can't say I've seen. Is it made by the same people that did Schindler's Fist perhaps? ;)

Seriously the movie wasn't that bad by other war movie standards and basing part of it on the fact that Vasily Grigoryevich Zaytsev doesn't look like Jude Law is pushing it given it would have made the ladies happy to watch a war movie with their male partners...
