For me it's about "am I challenged/having some fun or just frustrated?" and "am I at least learning anything?".    If it's not fun, move on to another battle and campaign, there's more content than I will probably ever finish.  Some things can't really be won, it's just a matter of fighting your best fight -- for example, last time I checked, Kampfgruppe Piper did not reach Antwerp, so sooner or later you're gonna lose that campaign.  Moving to another title and/or era also helps; change of scenery is nice after a bad time.

Here's a couple books that have very Black Sea - style combat.  Set in hypothetical russian attack to take Baltic states and then Poland.  The books are set in Poland.

Note, this aint literature, not by a longshot.  Everything is a set up for the fighting.  There's very silly cartoonish officer that needs to be overcome by our hero, but who cares? -- it's got some nasty fighting w modern weapons.  Book one is a stryker-based unit (plus some Poles) trying to take a heavily defended bridge position.  Book two is an abrams company + Irish infantry trying to defend a town.

Remnants of a US mechanized infantry company push to establish a hasty defense as a bloodied armored cavalry troop withdraws through their line.  Opposite of them, a combined Soviet forward patrol and vanguard battalion rally to maintain their momentum and pursue the battle in depth.

AI Snipers incredibly brave but incredibly silly. Spoilers Russian Snipers come in pairs.

The scouting party carefully breaks cover. However, the pointman is wounded by a sniper.

Post Scriptum the pointman also carried a 'Panzerfaust' not the wisest move but nothing a player can do about it.

I think i saw dark skinned men in CMCW actually.  'course, WW2 US was totally segregated so wouldn't see that there.

Perfect time to remind people (if they don't already do it) to create multiple copies of their license keys. I have a master email that contains all my keys. Every time I get a new game/module I open the email, hit reply, add the labeled key (Ex CMBS e5ty336...)to the email, and resend it to myself. I keep a Combat Mission folder on Yahoo where I put all of them. I also have a back up file on my comp just in case my internet goes out etc. So, between BF, my email, and my comp, I am pretty much covered. Keeping a copy on a thumb drive, portable drive or note book wouldn't be a bad idea either. The more places the better, I say.

To the German's surprise and relief, the center Soviet push pauses to do a security sweep of newly-acquired ground, regroup scattered units, and march off prisoners.

 
However, both flanks remain very hot. At Strongpoint East (Reichspost Ministry), the infantry battle rages.

 
The grizzled veterans of 2nd Platoon, the best in the company, use the good defensive terrain of the burned-out Ministry to great advantage.

 
However, Platoon Commander Heubaum judges that a tipping point may have been reached and calls in the reserve AT-rifle grenade team to help out. They put a number of rounds into the Soviets. The effort looks to have paid off, as the Soviet pressure eases up enough for the rest of the platoon to get back into stride.

 
Meanwhile, across the street to the AT-team's right, MG Platoon commander Hörter (observer from post 1) and his team work to exit the Luftwaffe Ministry and rejoin the remnants of his platoon. In the corridors, they bump into a fleeing panzerschreck team and decide to move together to link up with  one of Hörter's HMG teams at the corner of the building. Alas, as they approach, they can hear the team surrendering to the Soviets, who are now everywhere in the building.  The Soviets have all exits covered, the only thing to do is fight it out...

With no enemy armor spotted on the East flank, one of the Stugs is called in to help stop the Soviets in the Luftwaffe ministry from flanking Strongpoint East. The engine groans under the extra weight of its concrete armor. If he can arrive in time, there may be a chance to save Hörter!

 
Another Stug repositions to help the Anti-tank gun at Strongpoint East cover the East-West road to Potsdamer Platz and Strongpoint West.

 
There, just South of Strongpoint West, a mass of enemy armor has assembled for what looks like a very strong push on the point. Gulp!

If it is indeed down because of a larger than usual traffic, I guess there are worse thing to suffer from.
I will nonetheless keep checking daily 'til I can kick some yankee/commie asses.

I'll be darned, those awful M60A2s actually worked.  I just did a lot of hulldown, shoot & scoot.  Got total V w 16 minutes left.  Lost one tank, 3 dead and 2 wounded.  I suspect this will be high water mark of my CMCW career.  Like hitting homer in first MLB at bat and then striking out for the rest of a short visit to the majors.
