Any one else familiar with the quote from the rules on the old SPI board wargame NATO on how to simulate strategic nuclear warfare in the game?
NATO Operational Combat in Europe or something like that? I forget that particular one, but I like a couple of others
- Nuclear Weapons - Either player, feeling his position is hopeless, may overturn the game table. He forfeits the game, but we hope he enjoys losing so spectacularly.
-
Use of tactical nukes: if one of the players resorts to the use of tactical nukes, spray zippo lighter fuel over the game and set it to fire. The effect is comparable to reality.

I bagged a Leopard! Not in and of itself extraordinary, but I didn't take any casualties from it in the process!
A small achievement, but an achievement nonetheless.
@Vikingo I'm running with Reshade, using an Ambient Occlusion and some colour correction. See the previous page for a link, though I've tweaked my settings since posting.

FWIW, there was no explicit changes to the TacAI's pathing in Engine 4 that I'm aware of. Perhaps tweaking here or there for a corner case, but nothing more than that. Sometimes fixing a corner case produces a new corner case. Which is why corner cases in games are often left alone by game developers. Trying to fix a 1 in 1000 event could introduce a 1 in 100 event.
Steve
Could this be an auxiliary effect to the fleeing implementation in engine 4? It's possible that we never really saw this happen because fleeing (without losing command, perhaps?) is more common?
Anecdotally, I've found myself disappointed in the choices the TacAI makes when it does the "self preservation" pathing mid-turn (as opposed to broken/transparent icon running). It occurs to me that I don't really pay close attention to what the broken units are doing...

The problem is nukes. In Soviet doctrine nukes would be used on tactical level, against company defensive positions. How to simulate nukes in the game?
To the best of my knowledge I think Bil and CptMiller are correct in disagreeing with this. Once strategic parity was reached in the mid 1970s, Soviet strategists appear to have come to the conclusion that limited nuclear war was a non-starter. Prone to full escalation. In this sense, the USSR believed in two possible wars: a conventional war (either confined to Europe or otherwise) and a full nuclear exchange, with no in-between.
The wild card likely is actually the United States, which never pledged "no first use," and from what I've studied would need them to defend Europe until the microchip revolution in the 1980s came into full swing. Unfortunately, the Soviet policy appeared to have been massive retaliation, even though many Western planners anticipated Soviet first use.
This is an interesting book on the subject: http://www.npolicy.org/books/Getting_MAD/Ch5_Battilega.pdf

Syrian Mechanised Infantry assaulting a MILAN position.
I think I've played Alamo too much, though I find this scenario very hard as the Syrians. My forces rout as soon as they take fire, and take heavy casualties as they run away (fewer than if they had shot back, I imagine!). Particularly when storming the keep.

That's very likely it as the way I played it the first time, they didn't get to the battle until the armour that was left was pretty much right in the fortress and ranges were well under 400m. Am I correct in assuming that they need to unbutton to use it though?
This is probably the issue. MILAN has quite the minimum range - seems like 200 meters, according to the epitome of information, Wikipedia.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MILAN
If you're closer than that it probably can't line up to engage. I know I ran into that same issue in that scenario where I brought my MILAN teams onto the fortress walls and couldn't figure out why they weren't shooting!

In the Alamo scenario, the Anti-Aircraft tracks (ZSU-23-4 Shilka) won't fire at incoming aircraft.
I actually saw one doing just that this afternoon. I also saw a Leopard drive through an ambush, killing 4 BMPs and 2 T-62s without ever being spotted by the vehicles, all within 100 meters!

Maybe BFC is giving us DPICM? One can dream...

I noticed some artillery can call in "armor" fire missions. I haven't really noticed a difference, does anyone know what it's supposed to do?

I'm seriously enjoying this demo. I my Marder.

The tree and bush graphics appear similar to how they're rendered in CM Afghanistan, which is the oldest CM I ever played. They also show up in the depth buffer, thus allowing depth of field and ambient occlusion to use them. In CMBS and CMRT for example, they aren't in the depth buffer (I think it's because they have transparency). What this means for your frame rate, I can't say. I would think these trees would be faster, honestly!
I found that turning model quality to "balanced" improved performance significantly.

Syrian Infantry dismount under accurate German rifle fire. Apparently MILAN-3 has quite the minimum range that I had forgotten about!(Side note - CM:SF2 foliage is opaque! Looks a lot better, I think)

Steve himself said why he rarely has time to provide updates. I forget where exactly but it was essentially that the forums are a gateway drug, and he finds it very hard to "just post an update" and avoid getting his whole day (or more) taken up by answering questions and getting into discussions. He's human like you and me, so while I too would appreciate less radio silence I can perfectly understand why he is quiet sometimes! And if Steve doesn't do it, there really isn't anyone else...
I'm excited, but I have plenty of other stuff to do so I don't mind the wait.

I fired up a QB today and much to my great surprise my T-64BVs acquitted themselves very well during the game! I cannot say that had been my experience to date. Maybe it was because the weather was light fog so Russian superiority in spotting was negated. Also it was armor only so I kept the commander unbuttoned (a bad idea when there are snipers about). T64's always been a nostalgic favorite of mine. Its nice to see it finally winning a scenario.
Oh yeah, I found my enemy's T-64BVs did a number on my T-72B3s in my By the Beautiful Blue Dniepr scenario. They're definitely nothing to scoff at, especially if they're hull down. That 125mm gun is still dangerous!

Man, you should see the quality of the last contractor I hired... Insult to parasites maybe?

@Oliver_88 I like it. I would nitpick (as I like to do) that it should be in the ADMIN section but other than that you've got a solid system. What would you have happen if you order two teams to take 5 PIATs from a carrier that only has 5 itself?
-
It would do wonders for CM's flat lighting for sure.
But my (serious) hope for the next CM is physically based rendering. I think it'd really allow textures in CM to pop!
-
Good to know. I was hoping for the Eugen solution where you can play against factions you don't have but you can't play them yourself. Oh well, I plan on getting the big bundle anyway!

How do the modules work with PBEM? If I have NATO (if only for the Marder ) and my buddy is an anglophile and has the British module to get his Earl Grey fix, can we play a PBEM where my Panzergrenadiere give a Royal beatdown?
Or would we be limited to the content that we both have access to?
-
Oh I only opened the first mission you sent. It worked, the second one crashed but I think it was because I had already loaded the first one.

Certainly! AI would help with that too. I know I certainly rushed the crossing to make the AAR shorter!
