For the first time I caught such a bug, when the AI of tank cannot choose its target to defeat. Perhaps this is a rare bug.

HUSKER2142 reacted to domfluff in Does anyone think that the Dragon ATGMs in 1979 scenarios are too powerful?
The deaths following penetrations are not surprising - there's not a ton of room in a Soviet tank, and almost everything you're going to hit is going to be ammunition in the autoloader, which isn't going to end well.

The main issues the Dragons have in practice (aside from failure rate, correctly reflecting the difficulty in firing the thing) is that it has a 1km range.

As with any ATGM, there's a huge launch signature. That means you're exposing your position and having to keep exposed for several seconds, whilst being firmly in a range where the opposing MBT can easily destroy you. If you miss, you die. If you fail to kill the target, you die. Further, the MBT can lethally engage you at ranges well beyond those which you can engage them - 2km is nothing special here.

The advantages are ubiquity - the US platoons have three Dragons and five MGs per platoon, so there's one per squad in practice. That's a really nice capability, but it's not the primary capability of the US (the Dragon is not a Javelin). Ranged firepower should be based around a combination of TOW and MBT. Active Defence doctrine had the unit decamping when the enemy was in range of the medium antitank weapons (i.e., Dragon). That means that Dragons were not supposed to be the primary tank killers, but instead a volley of Dragons might be the signal to get a move on and get back into the transport.

In general, M47 Dragon is "fine". It's a valuable capability to have, but it's not something you can rely on, and it doesn't need to be.

Ok, that one is on me.  The air support works in the single player campaigns but of course this will be an issue in H2H.  Will get it fixed.

With some luck maybe they will release Combat Mission Space Lobster before retirement and/or when Steve finds a magic wand! :)
"When I have enough spare time for reading... it's off to Sci-Fi I go. So yeah, if I had a magic wand I would create another development team and we would all be kicking some Space Lobster butts by next summer. But said magic wand has not fallen into my possession, therefore I don't see it happening any time soon." // Steve (July 25, 2012)
But miracles do happen, 5 months ago no one on this forum* would have thought that we would be playing Combat Mission Cold War now!!

Using Google Earth, I have captured an area to play with map editor. I saved the overlay with "special editor overlay.bmp" filename in "Z folder" directory. Here it is, looking fine:

But, when I am opening the editor, the overlay is now splitted in two parts. See the red circle:

What am I doing wrong? In all BMP options, only 24 bits / R8 G8 B8 seems to be displayed by the editor but with the above result.

    Thanks

HUSKER2142 reacted to Aussiegrit in My top three tips in CM2 series
I've been playing the CM2 series of titles since 2011 with Combat Mission Battle for Normandy being my first experience with Battlefront. Since then I have purchased every WW2 title and every single addon since. Of the four main WW2 titles I would say Fortress Italy is my favourite closely followed by Normandy, then Final Blitzkreig and finally Red Thunder. After spending hundreds upon hundreds of hours playing these games there are many things I have learnt but the following are what have made me a more successful player:
    1. Don't watch the clock. In my early days of Combat Mission I focussed far too much on how much time I had left to complete my objectives. This resulted in me 'rushing' meaning excessive losses or stupid tactical decisions. So slow down. You almost always have more time than you think.
    2. Use your artillery,  in particular any off map big guns if you have them. And planning artillery strikes prior to mission commencement will result in more accurate fire missions. Even if the artillery doesn't kill a whole chunk of pixeltruppen it may at the least disrupt the opfor's movements, deny or otherwise dislodge a force from a defensive position. For offence or defence artillery is a godsend.
    3. Assess the terrain prior to mission commencement and use it to your advantage. Spend plenty of time 'down in the weeds' at pixeltruppen level understanding the terrain nuances and then plan your attack or defence around the terrain and objectives.
    4. Ok I said three but what the heck. My bonus tip in particular if you are a noob is to spend plenty of time experimenting in the training campaigns and custom quick battle to really understand the game mechanics and AI. Once you get a good understanding of how it all works your enjoyment level will go up while your frustration levels will more be as a result of your own silly mistake or just down to lady luck or the fog of war.
I would love to know what other experienced players think? I absolutely love the CM2 series and it is the game series I always go back to above anything else. I might have to break the WW2 fix with Combat Mission Cold War however when it is released.

Glorious March to Victory, Final Post - "Like Tears in Rain"
Well big thank you to all who watched.  I figure I should stop leaving you all hanging, so we cease fired on the last turn (33 I believe).  Now take the end-screen with a grain of salt:

So first off there was a dumb double-accounting error for the Soviet side.  Basically the parameters were:
    En Cas 50% = 50 VPs
    En Condition 50% = 50 VPs
    Dollbach Village = 100 VPs.
The error was the Soviets had another 100 VPs for having fewer than/better than 50% cas/cond, so I subtracted that because if we had paid attention Bil was above 50% too.  So the score was really 100 because I held the town.  (Note, also a small error in that his M150s were counted as tanks...a bug we noted for fixing)
The outstanding question is "could Bil have reduced me to 50% without going there himself"...that one is tougher.   So for Soviets:
    215 men: lost 71 = 33%
    17 Tanks: lost 10 = 58%
    17 AFVs: lost 9 = 53%
    For the US:
    138 men: lost 56 = 40.5%
    12 Tanks: lost 6 = 50%
17 AFVs (also counting his mortar carriers): Lost 6 = 35%
So this was by no stretch a "Total Victory", that was straight up on us for not checking the victory parameters.  I hold the village but given the drubbing I received in taking it, I am not sure I can put a statue up in Red Square for this either.  Add to this the fact I started with a lot more men and tanks, it starts to push the whole thing into Draw territory to my mind.
Now Bil had much better arty, had air (I had none) and EW which made my arty next to useless without TRPs (which I did not have) so there is that.  And my starting position was not the best but it is a poor craftsman that blames the workbench.
I will let you all judge for yourselves.  Regardless, was a helluva fight, the kind that comes around only every so often,  and we are all working to get you guys a chance at it yourselves soon enough.

HUSKER2142 reacted to Amedeo in Soviet use of ISU-152 assault guns during the CMCW timeframe
It's widely known that, after the end of WW2, the Soviets continued to use the ISU-152 in their armed forces. Modernized versions, like the ISU-152K (1956) and ISU-152M (1959) served with first line units well into the early 1970s, when modern self propelled guns, such as the 2S1 and 2S3, were introduced.
What is, perhaps, not so widely known is that the introduction of the new generation SPGs didn't decree the instantaneous and complete disappearance of these assault guns from Soviet inventories... and units!
Here are a few photos I recently found on the net, depicting the use of ISU-152 assault guns in Soviet Army/Navy units during the late '70s and the early '80s.
