Interesting photo .... There are some pictures floating around the net that show rolls of both fabric and metal linked matting being man-handled prior to laying. This is the first time I've seen this machine doing the job at an airfield.

I'm so used to combined arms

It would be nice to have a campaign about 11th Armoured Division in Normandy. -

I have to agree with Michael. If A.F.V. crews, Artillerymen and Truck Drivers e.t.c. were told by an Infantry Officer to "Attack" the enemy, he would have been told to "Go forth and multiply".... If they were being polite. -

I did wonder about the windows when it kept happening to me. I never thought about using a cover arc, Thanks for the tip. -

German M1A2 MK4s battlefront
Warts 'n' all replied to GLynn41's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
Having scratched my head and gone to my bookshelf. The first time I would have seen it being used was back in 1984 in Max Hasting's "Overlord". He states that "The Allies" called the later versions of the Panzer IV, the "MK IV Special". Although whether he means SHAEF, the British, or the Americans I'm not sure. -

Luke, I think that your designation is the correct one. Using the word "Mark" just seems to be a habit that people have gotten into, myself included. -

I prefer to use them as medic teams for riflemen who have been left a long way behind during an attack. And I certainly wouldn't want to risk mortar teams getting killed if they are a core unit in a campaign. -

Currently playing this battle at Authie as the Germans. Things went swimmingly for about the first 25 mins. Then just one Firefly accounted for six Mark IVs in very short order...grrr -
my Driver has the PIAT and Won't Give it Up

Doesn't shooting the driver count as a war crime? -

8.... The Road to Nijmegen campaign doesn't feature Churchills. Because the Guards were equipped with Shermans and Fireflys. -

A very interesting story. I'd never heard of "The Black Devils" before. Thanks for sharing this with us. -
Updating The Road to Montebourg
Warts 'n' all replied to Paper Tiger's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
Call me a boring old fart. But,personally I'd like a "Road to Montebourg" campaign where the AI has to make do with what the Wehrmacht had to hand, i.e. Hotchkisses, Renaults etc. It would a lot more fun, as well as historically accurate. -
Scottish Corridor, Mission 4

Haha.. I'll certainly be hitting that area a lot harder they next time I do this campaign. -

Mission 4 ... Humpty Dumpty There is a railway line running right across the map. The station is on the edge of the first objective. -

Alex, your phrase "after several goes" made me smile. I'm glad to see other people have a struggle too. I do like Bren Carriers, but I'd lost so many infantry that in the end they had no protection. When I used to play CMBO/BB/AK I racked up victory after victory. This new generation of Combat Mission is a whole lot tougher. It is going to be a long learning process. -

I got my arse kicked on this mission too. The minefields around the Railway station took out loads of men. I thought it was particularly mean to locate one of them under a concrete platform covered in paving slabs... grrrr! -
About Blasting Hedrow's?
Warts 'n' all replied to Zane's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
I did once have an engineer team blast the hedgerow to their right, when I'd ordered them to blast the one directly in front of them, they ran through the gap and got slaughtered for their pains. They should have obeyed me. Haha. -
A question about ammunition sharing.
Warts 'n' all replied to Oddball_E8's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
I found it a tad annoying when a breach team who'd run out of demo charges, wouldn't share their small arms ammo with a rifle squad that had run out of ammo. It meant that neither unit could do anything for the last ten minutes of the battle. Grrrrr! -
MG Nijmegen City Mastermap
Warts 'n' all replied to Erik Springelkamp's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
Back in the days of Henry VIII. His fourth wife Anne of Cleves was called the Flanders Mare, even though Cleves is nowhere near Flanders. Just because Bruges/Brugge was our main trading partner we thought of the entire Low Countries (including parts of north-western Germany) as "Flanders", and we couldn't be bothered to distinguish between the various duchies, counties etc. So it is no surprise that we think of all Netherlanders as being from Holland today. -

Thanks Erik I have read about Neuville-au-Plain in the past. So your theory might be correct. Or perhaps the scenario designer just wanted to see if anyone was paying attention. -

Erik, perhaps you know the answer to this. I've been watching a short clip of the Hunner Park mission on youtube. There is a location marked in red lettering called "le Pont du Neuville". That sounds a bit French to me. I can't find it on any map of Nijmegen past or present. Does such a place exist? -
So.... Bren Carriers, what's the point?
Warts 'n' all replied to Flying Penguin's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
I have to admit that when I played CMBO I didn't handle them very well. But that was me being stupid. They are certainly very versatile. And, of course, in real life, the fact that they were based on an early 30's Tankette meant that they were as cheap as chips to produce as the factories didn't need retooling.
